JAMMU, FEB 25: The Governor NN Vohra’s address to the joint sitting of the legislature, which could not be read out due to Opposition protest, outlined the priorities of the Omar Abdullah government as he said that the overwhelming public faith shown in the democratic system during elections has placed greater responsibility upon the elected representatives.

Jammu, Feb 25: There is no end to the dance of death and destruction on the roads of erstwhile Doda district as least 41 persons were killed and around a dozen and half injured, most of them critically as a passenger bus fell down a deep gorge on Bhaderwah road.
Sources said that a bus bearing registration number 759/JKO2U was on way to Bhaderwah from Jammu when skidded off the road at a place called Galgander and fell some 200 feet down in the Neeru Nallah near Pull Doda. The incident occurred at around 8:30 AM.

New Delhi, Feb 25: A "perturbed" Parliamentary Committee has asked the Defence Ministry to immediately work out a plan to correct the "unprecedented" shortage of officers in the armed forces which has reached 23.8, 16.7 and 12.1 per cent in army, navy and air force respectively.
The Standing Committee on Defence said "the Defence Ministry should go into the entire gamut of the issue (shortage of officers) in all the three services and urgently formulate a plan of action for implementation in a time bound manner."

JAMMU, FEB 25: Former Deputy Speaker, advocate and senior politician Mohammad Akbar Lone was unanimously elected as Speaker of the 11th Legislative Assembly on the inaugural day of the Budget Session, here today.
Minister for Finance, Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Abdul Rahim Rather proposed the name of Lone for the post of Speaker and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand seconded the proposal. Speaker Pro-tem, Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam sought vote in favour of Lone, who got unanimously elected by a voice vote.

Jammu: While all nominations for election to 11 seats of the upper house were found valid on scrutiny on Wednesday, candidates of Leh and Kargil are all set to be declared unopposed to the Legislative Council on 27 February, the last date for withdrawal of candidature.
Two former bureaucrats and three ex-Ministers are among 17 candidates in fray to the state Legislative Council, the election, if necessary, are scheduled to be held on 7th of the next month.
