The marathon rise in prices of essential commodities has started telling on the public image of the central government but in the ensuing election year, the Jammu and Kashmir government is not in a mood to take any chances.
The government is all set to promulgate a sweeping law to check the irrational price rise and the campaign will be backed by Police action. The law is likely to be in place anytime through enactment of an ordinance, sources told EARLY TIMES.
For past few months, there have been across the board protests in almost all parts of state against the rise in prices of essential commodities. Particularly in the capital cities, for BJP in Jammu and for National Conference in Srinagar, the price escalation is a major issue against the coalition government. As elections approach near, a non stop escalation in the prices of essentials can badly affect image of the government.

Much to the chagrin of the government, unabated rising prices of vegetables, food articles and steel pushed the inflation to a 40 month high of 7.41 per cent, casting a shadow on economic growth.
Growing for the eighth consecutive week, inflation, based on wholesale price index, rose by 0.41 per cent in the week ended March 29 from 7 per cent in the previous week, a development that could lead to tightening of the monetary policy likely to be announced this month by RBI.
Inflation, which was 6.54 per cent a year-ago, last touched 7.76 per cent during the week ended November 6, 2004.
