Jammu and Kashmir may be keep crying for every watt of power to meet its bare minimum needs, but the National Hydro-electric Power Corporation is making good money over the waters of this state.
A Government of India Corporation, the NHPC had come into being in 1975 and took up first power project for construction in Jammu and Kashmir –the Salal project near Reasi. For last 33 years the NHPC had barely been able to make its ends meet. But whatever it earned had major share of earning from its projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
Now when NHPC has posted huge earning, it is no wonder that the major chunk has again come from its projects in Jammu and Kashmir. Presently country’s major hydro-electric power producer, the NHPC, first time after inception in 1975 had registered profit of more than Rs 1000 crores. Ever since the Commanding Officer of Nagrota Corps told a press conference that militants were waiting on the other side of the Line of Control to cross over, a theory of 400 ultras planning to sneak in is taking rounds.
Even though the General had estimated that there may be come 300 to 400 militants on the other side, but different “security outlets” fanning concerns that as many militants were planning to cross over.

Both the Union Minister for Water Resources and the PCC Chief, Prof. Saifuddin Soz and Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, view each other with suspicion. Azad has fears that his importance in the AICC and in the centre was, day in and day out, being threatened by Prof. Soz. This threat perception further increased when Prof. Soz was appointed PCC President against the wishes of Azad.
