| Jammu-Poonch records 49 pc turnout in Phase-I of LS polling in J&K | | Enthusism high among elders, rural folks but low among youth, urban voters | | | Munish Gupta
JAMMU, April 16: Moderate voter turnout of 49 percent was recorded in Jammu-Poonch constituency as Phase-I of the Lok Sabha elections was conducted smoothly by Election Commission of India (ECI) in Jammu and Kashmir today. There was an increase of nearly five percent voter turnout over 44.49 percent recorded in the Lok Sabha elections of 2004 but in a remarkable contrast to the Assembly elections of November-December 2008, there was subdued enthusiasm among the youth and over a half of the urban folks did not turn up to exercise their franchise.
After supervising the day-long polling process at 2,210 polling stations for 17.21 Lakh eligible voters---spread in 20 Assembly segments of Jammu, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts---Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, B R Sharma revealed at a crowded news conference here this evening that nearly 49 per cent voter turnout had been recorded in Phase-I of Lok Sabha elections in the state today. JAMMU, APR 16 : At least 27 people were injured, six of them seriously, in clashes between the supporters of rival political parties during polling in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri today, official sources said.
Election was in progress for the Jammu Lok Sabha seat covering 20 Assembly segments spread over four border districts of Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch.
Voting was suspended at 44-A-Salwah polling station in Mendhar area of Poonch after the EVM was damaged in clashes between Congress and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) supporters, official sources said.

SRINAGAR: Awami National Conference (ANC) President, Khalida Shah has been nominated as party candidate from Srinagar parliamentary constituency,
where she will be pitted against her brother and NC chief Farooq Abdulla.
"Our party president Khalida Shah is contesting the elections from Srinagar parliamentary constituency," senior vice president of the party Muzaffar Shah told reporters.

SRINAGAR: As many as 70 people cross sides in the Karvan-e-Aman bus operating between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Official sources said 29 guests from PoK arrived here to meet their relatives for the first time after 1947.
They said 12 residents of this side who had crossed over to PoK also returned today.

NEW DELHI, April 16: Dr Manmohan Singh’s pictures and portraits have been removed not only from the official domains of Press Information Bureau (PIB) but also from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as Election Commission of India has struck on the country’s topmost office with its Model Copde of Conduct (MCC), which would remain in force till completion of the current Lok Sabha elections in third week of May.
