SRINAGAR, Aug 15: In a major security lapse, a suspended head constable of Jammu & Kashmir Police today attacked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah with his shoes on occasion of the ceremonial Independence Day parade at Bakhshi Memorial Sports Stadium. The show-thrower, who had managed to take seat among senior IAS and IPS officers in the VIP gallery, was captured and mercilessly beaten which led to his admission at SKIMS. Fifteen security officials of lower ranks have been placed under suspension even as the investigation into the security lapse is underway and Police claimed that the head constable of "criminal and dubious background" had revealed how a mainstream politician had facilitated his entry into the VIP gallery.
Eyewitnesses told Early Times that an I-Day ceremony guest seated in 4th row of the VIP gallery in the Central Pavilion of Bakhshi Stadium took out his shoe and hurled it on Chief Minister when Mr Omar Abdullah just reached the podium and began unfurling the Tricolour at 10.15 a.m. today. | | 3 jawans killed, 3 hurt in road mishap | | | JAMMU: Three army jawans were killed and three others wounded critically when the vehicle in which they were travelling met with an accident near the Line of Control (LoC) at Faqir Dhara in Poonch Saturday night. The dead were identified as Pushkar Singh, Naveen Kumar and Naik Dev Nath, and the injured as Naib Sub. Kundan Singh, Lance Naik Gobind Singh and sepoy Prem Singh Gurang.
Police sources said the incident occurred at about 10.30 pm when an army vehicle, carrying six jawans from a forward post to the battalion headquarters of 8 Kumaon, skidded off the road and fell into a gorge.

| | 2 held for stealing TMT iron bars | | | JAMMU: Two youth, allegedly involved in the theft of TMT iron bars from the godown of a railway construction company at Reasi, were today arrested by police.
They were identified as Prithvi Raj Gandotra alias Billu, son of Anand Saroop of ward No 4, Reasi, and Surinder Kumar alias Pawan, son of Dina Nath of Dhanva, Reasi.
Two tons of iron bars worth Rs 80,000, which they had allegedly stolen from the Ritwick railway construction company's godown at Reasi, were also recovered from their possession, police sources said. The iron bars were stolen from the company's godown at Geeta Nagar, Reasi, on August 6 last, the sources added.

Henrietee Borg Kristensen, a resident of Grind Stet in Denmark, died at Skiu Markha Tracking Route at Leh on August 5. His body was exhumed and brought to Leh today.
“After proper identification by the representatives of Royal Danish Embassy and completion of all legal formalities, the body was handed over to authorised person at a Leh camp under proper receipt. The body is being airlifted to New Delhi,” police sources said.

JAMMU, Aug 15: As the nation celebrated 64th Independence Day with enthusiasm and fanfare, a possible clash between two groups of students was today averted at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri over the issue of hoisting of the national flag.
Reliable police sources said some students from Jammu decided to celebrate the Independence Day in the campus hostel in the afternoon.

RAJOURI/JAMMU, Aug 15: Trained in guerilla warfare and the acts of sabotage, the two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants killed by army and police today in a 36-hour-long gunbattle at Saronwali in Thanamandi, Rajouri, had dug out pits in the maize fields to save themselves from the jawans' bullets.
This became known in the afternoon while the jawans moved forward in the fields to take on the militants hiding there, police sources said.
There were a total of six militants. While three got engaged in an encounter with troops, the other three were firing from a nearby hilltop, the sources added.
