Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 3 : Despite of the ban on pre paid SMS services in the city, people have found alternatives to remain in touch with their friends and relatives.
The Pre paid Short Message Service (SMS) in Jammu and Kashmir was banned in 2010 for security reasons. The ban subjected people to inconvenience but they have be now opted for alternatives like Whats app, Nimbus, Face book and We chat.
From 2010 various improvements have been made in the field of telecommunications with various other messaging options pouring in which is giving some respite to the people who are not able to use prepaid SMS services due to the ban by the state government.
Even if people living in urban areas of the city have found ways to connect with their friends and relatives despite the ban, but the rural population of the city who not even know about the other chat options they are facing more problems in this regard and are waiting of lifting the ban on prepaid SMS services by the state government so that they can easily connect with their near and dear ones.
Ayesha Sharma resident of Trikuta Nagar said, "If you have to cut a tree you have to cut it from the root and not the stems should be cut, banning the SMS is not a solution of the problem.
As once the stems re-grow it will become again a huge tree so the major cause of this conflict should be cured and not the messages should be banned.
Why every time the innocent common mass has to suffer because of these anti-social elements? And the most affected ones are the youths whose networking goes through SMS only."
"People have otherwise found ways to replace the SMS ban by using other chatting options, so the ban on SMS is just of no use. The government should consider this," she added.
Ban had been imposed on pre paid SMS service by the state government in April 2010 and recently Omar Abdullah had hinted that during the internal security conference chaired by Prime Minister on June 5, 2013 he will raise this issue and will ask them to resolve the issue but no impact of it can be seen till yet.
An official of BSNL said, "The ban has been imposed on SMS prepaid service in J&K due to some security issues but the upliftment of this ban has not been considered till yet. It can be possible in the near future but nothing can be said about it. The ban had to be uplifted but due to some circumstances nothing has been done in the regard."
