| Police, CRPF face embarrassment as militants flee in Ahmad Nagar locality | | Residents accuse police, CRPF of carrying out unprovoked firing | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 3: Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel faced major embarrassment as the militants who got holed up in the Ahmad Nagar locality in the outskirts of summer capital managed to break free the cordon and flee from the site of the encounter that broke out on Wednesday night. Reports said that five police cops got injured when they were caught unawares after being fired upon by the militants who got trapped during a cordon and search operation launched in the Ahmad Nagar some 15 kilometers away from the centre. Despite reinforcements being sent to the area the holed up militants managed to run away while taking advantage of the darkness in the area during the preceding night. Some of the reports said that a top ranking Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant commander Abu Huzaifa was one of the trapped militants and he along with his associates managed to flee. However, the reports could not be confirmed since police remained tight lipped over the incident and not willing to share details. Reports said that police and CRPF personnel cordoned off the Ahmad Nagar area on late evening on Wednesday after inputs suggesting presence of militants in the area. As the forces started search operation, one of the militants who got holed up lobbed a grenade and fired indiscriminately leaving two cops injured. Three more cops sustained injuries in the exchange of fire between the two sides. The wounded policemen were immediately removed to hospital. The firing between militants and forces continued till the wee hours today. During the dead of the night intense firing and few blasts took place and same was followed by eerie calm. In the morning as the police and CRPF personnel launched cordon and search operation in the area they were embarrassed as they found no militants in the Ahmad Nagar locality. Meanwhile, the residents of Ahmad Nagar have refuted the police version saying that some militants were present in the area. The residents said that no militant was present in the area and the police and CRPF personnel carried out firing without any rhyme and reason. They accused the police and CRPF of victimizing the common people in the name of taking action against militants. The residents alleged that during firing some of the houses and a Pashmina Centre got damaged thus incurring huge losses to the owners. The residents have lodged a complaint with Soura Police Station and they have urged the police to carry out a fair probe in the incident. They said once thorough investigations are carried out the real picture would be presented before the people. |
