| For vote-bank politics, Congress ignores state terror | | 'Persecution' of innocent Ajay Kumar | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 8: Torture and persecution of Ajay Kumar of Kishtwar within the premises of Kishtwar Police station was roundly condemned by the minority community in Kishtwar district as well as by a number of political and social organizations, including the BJP and the Panthers Party. The minority community of Kishtwar observed a massive bandh two days ago to register protest against certain members of the Special Investigating Team (SIT) who perpetrated all sorts of barbarities on the "innocent" and minor Ajay Kumar to the extent that he had to be shifted to the Jammu Medical College Hospital last week for immediate medical treatment. They had tortured Ajay Kumar for almost a week and the objected, according to reliable sources, was to "force him to confess that he was also responsible for the August 9 violence in Kishtwar" that resulted in three deaths and loss to properties of the minority community worth several crores of rupees. According to the same sources, "another objective of the SIT members was to make Ajay Kumar fix responsibility for the violence on certain members of the minority community who had nothing to do with the August 9violence". On their part, the BJP and the Panthers Party raised the issue in the Assembly, condemned the police's senseless brutalities and demanded action against the culprits. It was expected that the NC and similar other Kashmiroutfits would ignore the atrocities committed on Ajay Kumar and it happened. It did not surprise anyone, as everyone knew that the outfits like the NC care more for the separatists and unruly elements in Kashmir than with the feelings of the minority communities. What, however, disturbed the minority communities in the state more was the indifferent attitude of the Congress party, which calls itself secular. Not a single Congress leader from Jammu or from Kashmir attacked the culprits or demanded action against them. It is no wonder then that the minority community in Kishtwar and elsewhere in Jammu province is seething with anger and accusing the Congress party of indulging in vote-bank politics. If the present mood of the minority community in the entire erstwhile Doda district is any indication, then it can be said that the Congress would be rejected by it during the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. It is so angry with the Congress party. It has no love lost for the Congress MP Lal Singh and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. In fact, many aggrieved members of the minority community have dismissed these and other Congress leaders as "biased and communal".
