Assembly adopts resolution against former Army chief
Why is NC against Gen V K Singh?

Rustam

JAMMU, Oct 8: On Monday, the Kashmiri-dominated Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly adopted a resolution urging the UPA Government to hold a time-bound probe into the former Army Chief General VK Singh's allegations that ministers in Jammu & Kashmir were on the payrolls of Army. The one-line resolution was moved by none other than NC working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, notwithstanding the fact that the former Army chief had repeatedly said that the Army never bribed the Kashmiri politicians.
Why is the NC against General V K Singh? Why because General Singh holds it squarely responsible for the whole mess in Kashmir. Take, for example, General Singh's view on the 2010 summer agitation in KashmirValley. General Singh is of the view that the 2010 summer agitation in Kashmir "was not orchestrated but started with the killing of a youth in Srinagar".
The decorated former Army chief holds the view that the NC misled the nation that 2010 summer agitation had links with Machil encounter and that the reality was that "this agitation started when a youth namely Tufail Matoo was killed by police in Srinagar city in June 2010". He believes, and rightly, that "atmosphere in Kashmir deteriorated because of the bad policies of ruling NC". What the former Army chief has repeatedly said about the 2010 anti-India unrest in Kashmir reads like this: "This party (NC) is responsible for unrest in Kashmir. The leaders of this party are opportunists who can go to any extent to achieve their goal. The Army tried its best to pacify youth and it was on my directions that Army started sports activities in Kashmir so that 'frustrated' youth could be shown a direction. Hundreds of Kashmir youth participated in Kashmir Premier League (KPL) and other activities. The Army is there to restore peace and work for the welfare of the people but National Conference is alienating youth of Valley".
The General's stand on the 2010 anti-India demonstrations is not the only reason that is being criticized by the NC and similar other controversial outfits in the Valley, including the separatist organizations. The former Army chief's stands on the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the nature of ongoing movement in the Valley constituted two other causes which made the NC speak ill of General V K Singh. General Singh had opposed tooth and nail the Chief Minister's demanding seeking withdrawal of the AFSPA saying the time was not opportune. And he had described the ongoing movement in the Valley ideological and criticized certain elements in the establishment without naming them for their failure to rise to the occasion and deal with the situation in the manner required. General V K Singh had rebuffed those demanding the revocation of the AFSPA and denounced the movement in Kashmir as anti-India based on pernicious ideology.
The bitter opposition of Omar Abdullah and his ilk to General V K Singh and the adoption of atrocious resolution against him need to be viewed in this context. It hardly matters that the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly adopted anti-General, nay anti-Army, resolution. For, the entire nation, which has lost its confidence in the establishments in New Delhi and the state, is standing behind the former Army chief. It is unfortunate that he is not leading the Army at a time when Pakistani Army and Pakistani-trained and supporters terrorists have intruded into our Keran sector. Had he been the Army chief, Pakistan would not have dared to do what it did on September 23. It was on September 23, 2013 that the Pakistani soldiers, along with scores of terrorists, breached the Line of Control in Keran sector to create another Kargil. Our Army has been doing all that it could to evict and liquidate the intruders ever since then, notwithstanding the fact that the present leadership at the centre is just incompetent and uninspiring.
