| Army puts onus on Omar to bring accountability | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 27: The army has not put the onus on the Chief Minister to take action for even showing semblance of accountability and transparency in governance. Omar, who had locked horns and accused Army for not respecting the aspirations of the people, had ordered the court martial of six army personnel by the Army in the alleged Machil encounter. The order was issued despite the fact that Army had strong reservations about it. Even former army chief had also given a different version about the incident in an interview. "Now the clamour for transparency and accountability will grow more. Omar now can't shield his wrong doing by publicly accusing Army of being insensitive to the people of the Kashmir. Now people in Kashmir will want him to take action against corrupt police and administrative officials," said a senior Congress Minister. The Army has now put the onus on the Omar Abdullah to take action against police officials responsible for the death of 110 people in 2010. "Army was no way responsible for it and it didn't act against the protestors. It was the State police. Now Omar should take action against them. He has been accusing us of not bringing the accused to book. We have done it now let him also bring the accused to the book," said a senior army officer. The political parties had already started raising the issue of taking action against the accused. PDP had said the same action should be taken for people responsible for the death of 110 people. Congress, the coalition partner, had also said that Omar should not take action who are corrupt and had cited the no action has been taken on the purchase of the spurious drug case and also for alleged sub standard pipes. "These two scams have become forgotten chapter. The accused who minted or swindled tax payers money are in a holiday mood besides occupying plum posts and have gone scot free. Till date no responsibility has been fixed," said Congress leader Abdul Gani Vakil. The Chief Minister has now few months left in the office and he would be hard pressed to take action against the corrupt amidst growing demand of opposition and may not get the time to use action of Army as a victory of his Government's fight with the Army. |
