| Congress to emerge as single largest party, says Tara Chand | | Political Scene | | Rustam Jammu, Dec 27: Senior Congress leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand the other day claimed that the Congress will emerge as the single largest party in the state in the forthcoming Assembly elections. "The Congress will emerge as single largest party in the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state…As far as I know we (NC and Congress) have been delivering to the best of our capacities. But people always expect higher from any Government and we too want to give our best to the people. As far as the functioning of our coalition goes, let me tell you that it is running smoothly. Education, health sector, power supply, safe drinking water, social welfare schemes, infrastructure building, exploiting tourism potential, agriculture and employment generation have been the priorities of the present coalition Government and many achievements have been recorded in the respective fields since the formation of the Government in 2009," he said. The claim of Tara Chand that the Congress will emerge as the largest party in the state in the 2014 Assembly elections appears to be a tall claim considering the mood of the common masses. The mood is against both the Congress and its alliance partner NC and there is hardly any section of society that is pleased with the functioning of this coalition Government. There prevails widespread discontent throughout the state and the grouse of each and every section of society is that the present dispensation has failed to deliver on any front and their charge is that "this is the most inefficient, arrogant and corrupt dispensation the state ever witnessed after 1947". In Jammu province, in particular, the people are more critical of the Congress rather than the NC. They say that "they do not expect any justice and fair play from the Valley-centric NC and that they had expected that the Congress would behave like a national party and make its coalition partner devise and implement social, cultural, economic, political and administrative policies that would take care of all the interests and all the regions, but the Congress has thought it politically wise to become the NC's B-team and endorse without any reservation all the decisions of the NC". "The Congress, and not the NC, is responsible for the neglect of Jammu province and all the Congress Ministers are conducting themselves in a manner that shows that they are Ministers only of their respective constituencies," they also say. Significantly, this was also the view that was expressed by AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi, in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir Congress Ambika Soni and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in Jammu only recently. The fact of the matter is that the Congress has lost most of its sheen and appeal in Jammu province that returns 37 members to the Assembly. No one really talks high of the Congress party and the Congress Ministers. On the contrary, the people question their credentials and dismiss them as "agents of the Kashmiri rulers". This is also the opinion of most of the JKPCC members and Congress cadres and supporters. If the Congress is to remain somewhat relevant atleast in Jammu province, it has to refashion its whole approach and win over the confidence of the people by fulfilling the promises it made in 2002 and 2008. The starting point could be the establishment of the promised regional council. |
