Jammu, Dec 4: The sixth annual Rt. Rev. Aziz William Memorial Inter-School Debate Competition was held in the historic 'Cowie Hall' of Alexander Memorial School, Eid-Gah-Residency Road, Jammu today. The competetion was sponsored by YMCA Chandigarh-Shimla, a unit of 'Alliance of YMCAs of North India' in collaboration with Alexander Memorial School, Jammu. The Proposition of the Debate was , In the opinion of this House 'Man is the Maker of His Own Destiny'. Two debaters, each from twelve prestigious schools of Jammu comprising Army Public School, Nagrota, Jodhamal Public School, K.C International School, Presentation Convent School, St. Xavier's Convent School, Lawrence Public School, S.D. Tarapuri School, Vishwa Bharti School, Delhi Public School, Alexander Memorial School, G.D. Goenka School and J&K Police Public School, Miran Sahib participated in the contest. Vijaya Rajendra, Chairperson Police Wives Welfare Association, J&K state was the Chief Guest and Dr Deepshikha Kotwal, former Director, Centre for Women Studies and Professor, department of English, University of Jammu was the Guest of Honour while Prof. Dr. Sandhya Bhardwaj and Prof. Mrs. Ruth Gill, both from department of English, GGM Science College, Jammu were the adjudicators of the Debate. Arvind Noel and Elizabeth Noel were the YMCA representatives from Chandigarh. A large number of educationists and high dignitaries including Pallavi Gillani, Shreesha Sriniwas, Neeha J.P. Singh, Chetna Khullar, Renu Modi and Neetu Bali also graced the occasion. Earlier, Esther William, Principal Alexander Memorial School and Hon. Secretary YMCA, Jammu welcomed the esteemed guests and the learned judges. After the customary lighting of the lamp and presentation of bouquets, the debate competition started. The young debaters possessed sound understanding of the Motion of the Debate. They exhibited good debating skill, commendable oratory and nice control over English language. The debate contest was a lively, enjoyable and knowledgeable experience for the worthy audience. After giving away the prizes, the Chief Guest, lauded the performance of the debaters and urged them to further sharpen and enrich their debating skills. The Rolling Trophy was bagged by Delhi Public School, Jammu while Jodhamal Public School, Jammu was declared the Runner Up. Medals and Certificates of merit were given to Niharika Sharma of Delhi Public School, Jammu for being the best debater, Simran Mahajan of Alexander Memorial School, Jammu for being the second best debater, Harsimar Kaur of Jodhamal Public School, Jammu for being the most promising debater. Four participants of the Winner and the Runner Up teams were given individual prizes. Besides, the debater who put the most thought provoking question and the debater who gave the most relevant answer thereto were also awarded special prizes. T.N. Kaul of Alexander Memorial School, was the Moderator of the debate while Laxmi Jastolia compered the programme and Rajni Koul presented the vote of thanks. The host school also served refreshment to all the guests and participants. |
