More than 50 % contesting candidates are undergraduates | Democracy through illiterates! | | Shiv Dev Thakur Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 4: At least 53% candidates contesting the forthcoming phases of assembly elections are undergraduates. The details provided by Balvinder Singh, RTI activist who runs an organization namely, J&K Election Watch Association for Democratic reforms , are enough to reflect the mockery of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the details, 53% of the candidates contesting the elections of IV phase are undergraduates out of which 5% are illiterates, 13% are 8th pass, 20% are matriculates and 15 % are 12th pass. The detail provided to ADR further reads that only 2% of the total candidates contesting the elections of IV phase holds doctorate degrees while 8% are Post Graduates, 15 % are Professional Graduates , 20 % are graduates and 2% are others. Some political analysts apprehend that as more than half of the contesting candidates are undergraduates , it could be problematic for such candidates to raise the public related issues in the Assembly proceedings if they get the decisive public mandate. Some localists when contacted said that it is quite pathetic that there is a dearth of educated people in politics. They also said that the same might be the reason for lacking behind of the Jammu and Kashmir State. They further said that a criterion of educational qualification for stepping in into the politics should be as the same which was suggested by AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi. They again said that such criteria of educational qualification for stepping in into the politics will be helpful for a healthy democracy.
Education Group Number of Candidates analyzed Illiterate 9 8th Pass 23 10th Pass 37 12th Pass 27 Graduate 37 Graduate Professional 28 Post Graduate 15 Doctorate 2 Others 4 Total 182
