Says, no need of Hindu Chief Minister; asks small parties in Kashmir to make Modi's rally a success
BJP eyes Kashmir forgets Jammu

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 4: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders are leaving no stone unturned to lure the voters in Muslim dominated Kashmir. After dumping the demand to abrogate Article 370 in the state, the BJP has made it clear that if the party forms the next government in Jammu and Kashmir it would not pursue the agenda of having a Hindu Chief Minister.
Sources told Early Times that the senior BJP leaders who have arrived in Kashmir ahead of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's December 8 rally in Srinagar have conveyed it to the leaders of Kashmir based parties that BJP's only aim is development and other issues, including Article 370 and having a Hindu Chief Minister, are non-issues.
The insiders said that BJP leaders are holding closed door meetings with the leaders of the small parties and are telling them that BJP is a "secular party" and it would follow the advice of the Kashmiri leaders in letter and spirit. "The BJP leaders have convinced many leaders of the small parties in Kashmir to send their supporters to attend the Srinagar rally of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and have requested them that they should don saffron attire," the insiders added.
They said that BJP leaders believe that forming the government in Jammu and Kashmir would give a fillip to the "pan-India image" of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "After facing disappointment in the first two phases of the ongoing assembly elections in Kashmir BJP leaders are trying their best to rope in the candidates and such parties which can manage a few seats in the Valley," insiders added.
Sources said that BJP softening its stand on key issues is not helping the party's cause nor in Kashmir neither in Jammu region. People across Kashmir are not ready to believe that BJP is a secular party and would help them if it comes in power. "The BJP government at the Centre not providing any substantial relief to the flood hit people has also gone against the party. They believe that had Congress led government been at the Centre it would have helped them in many ways and could have even allowed international aid to reach Kashmir," sources added.
On the other hand, they said, people in the Jammu region have been disillusioned by the party's wavering stand and confusing statements issued by their leaders.
"BJP leaders just concentrating on Kashmir and making all the moves to appease the people across the Valley has not gone well with the Jammuites. BJP had emerged as a strong alternative in Jammu region and people were of the opinion that BJP is the only party which can counter Kashmir centric parties and politicians. BJP taking Jammuites for granted and hoping that anti-incumbency factor would go in its favour is all set to backfire," said an analyst.
He said BJP has forgotten that it increased its tally in Jammu region from one to 11 in 2008 assembly polls as it leaders left no stone unturned to derive maximum political mileage out of the Amarnath land row. "BJP for the past six decades has failed to open its account in Kashmir and its set to face the same fate this time around. The party leaders ignoring Jammu and shifting their focus on Kashmir is not going to help them," the analyst opined.
He said another factor which has unnerved BJP is the growing support for the People’s Democratic Party in both the regions. "If PDP falls short of a few seats everyone including Congress would be ready to extend support to the party to form the next government to keep NC and BJP at bay," the analyst added.
Many people are of the opinion that BJP trying to project its "soft image" has not helped the party and has in fact served as a deterrent for it. BJP taking a U-turn in Jammu and Kashmir and relying on a handful of "inexperienced people" in Kashmir has damaged its cause. "BJP could have won most seats in the Jammu region had it stuck to its agenda of revoking Article 370 and having a Hindu Chief Minister. It succumbing under pressure and changing its policy has created an opening for the Congress party, which has been advocating Hindu CM for JK, in Jammu region.
