Who would be surprised if all Kashmiri separatist leaders joined state elections? | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 4: The massive participation of people in the first two phases of State Assembly elections has created flutter and frustration in the ranks of Kashmiri separatist leaders. For more than 20 years the separatist leaders have been forcing people to boycott elections in the Valley. These separatist leaders have been projecting the low voter turnout in the elections as the universal assertion of the people of Kashmir against India and the so-called desire of the people to secede from the rest of the country. Separatist sympathisers outside the country have been engaged in vigorous propaganda to convince the World that the non-participation of the people of Kashmir in Indian elections is proof of the fact that Kashmiris have nothing to do with India and her democratic process or democratic institutions of India. For many years the propaganda was held because the separatist leaders had been ensuring through the power of the separatist gunmen that fear is instilled in the hearts and minds of the people so that they stay away from exercising their fundamental democratic right to elect a government of their choice. Year 2014 would go down in the history of Jammu and Kashmir as the burial of both poll boycott and the separatist propaganda of gun enforced boycott as expression of separatist aspirations. While the first phase recorded 70% voter turnout in the Valley, the second phase of these elections recorded 72% voter turnout. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who addressed civil society members in Srinagar said he was pleasantly surprised to learn that while Jharkhand had recorded only 61% voter turnout, J&K had recorded 72% voting in the second phase. This has forced the separatists to issue statements that participation in elections has nothing to do with the larger issue of separatism in Kashmir. Somebody needs to ask these separatist leaders how suddenly they have realised that voter participation had nothing to do with separatism when for more than 20 years they have been saying low voter participation is proof of Kashmiri's endorsement of the separatist agenda? The fact of the matter is test one of them is already in the electoral race and others are worried that they have missed the bus. It can be said without any fear of rebuttal that in near future the separatists would be directly taking part in the elections and still claiming that they are doing so to further the separatist agenda in Kashmir. Is fielding of proxy candidates in the past elections anything new to Kashmiri separatist leaders? |
