ISM doctor heads PHC Sudhmahadev | Govt leaves 20,000 souls in lurch | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 6: The much hyped claims of the state government about posting doctors in far flung areas to serve poor people have proved to be a hoax. Primary Health Centre (PHC) Sudhmahadev in Chenani here has one ISM doctor, a dental surgeon, three nurses and two pharmacists. Nearly 20,000 souls of remote and mountainous areas depend on this PHC, which has no allopathic doctor. Sources told Early Times that posts of two assistant surgeons in the PHC have been lying vacant for the past many years and government seems least interested in filling up these vacancies. Raj Kumar of Sudhmahadev said that state government has nothing to offer to the people of remote areas. "Only a PHC building was established here to hoodwink the people," he added. "During recent election campaign many politicians claimed that that the health institutions will be upgraded as per the norms of Indian Public Health Standard (IPHS). Such promises till date have remained confined to papers only," Kumar added. Locals said that they have approached Block Medical Officer (BMO) on many occasion and requested him to send doctors to PHC Sudhmahadev. "Our pleas fell into deaf ears," they added. Despite repeated attempts BMO Chenani Dr ML Rana didn't pick the phone. When contacted Chief Medical Officer Dr Arun Sharma acknowledged that shortage of staff is a cause of concern. "We have appraised the higher ups time and again about the problems we are facing due to staff shortage. It's for them to act," Dr Sharma added. |
