JK has no organ transplant facility | Thousands of people visit other states to undergo procedure | | G S Asgotra
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 6: Despite setting up buildings at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) in Jammu and Srinagar for carrying out organ transplant procedures, state government has failed to install equipments needed to carry out the process forcing thousands of patients to visit other states to undergo the surgery. Sources informed Early Times that nearly 4000-5000 patients visit neighbouring states every year to undergo organ transplant procedure. Sources in the department said that buildings for carrying out organ transplant were constructed in GMC Jammu and GMC Srinagar but machinery was not installed due to non availability of funds. A doctor at GMC Jammu said that due to non availability of eye bank, they have to refer all needy patients outside the state for transplantation of cornea. "Eye donation is a common phenomenon in various parts of country and many people in Jammu can also act as donors but we cannot persuade masses to donate eyes as we have no eye bank here," he said, adding, "If someone wants to donate eyes, he/she is asked to visit some other states and in process many people change their mind." The Superintend of GMC&H, Rabinder Rattan Pal said, "Infrastructure for the eye bank is ready but due to lack of the equipments we are stuck". He said organ transplant cannot be carried out in JK till the state assembly passes a bill allowing organ transplant. Principal GMC&H, Dr Ganshyam said, "Whenever the union government would allocate funds to purchase the equipment and machinery organ banks will start functioning." |
