| Abandon separatist ideology to conciliate alienated Jammu, Ladakh | | Hurriyat and unity of J&K | |

JAMMU, Jan 6: The Hurriyat Conference - Mirwaiz has finally recognized that the support of Jammu and Ladakh is imperative if the unity and integrity of Jammu & Kashmir is to be maintained. The state would disintegrate in case Jammu and Ladakh stuck to their respective stands and it needs their cooperation to maintain the state's unity and integrity, this was one of the refrains of the Mirwaiz Omar Farooq's January 5 address at a seminar, held at Rajbagh, Srinagar. The theme of the seminar was "Right to Self Determination and UN resolutions". What exactly did the Mirwaiz say about the people of Jammu and Ladakh vis-à-vis the unity and integrity of the state? He, among other things, said: "Some parties call us separatists and secessionists who have an agenda of dividing the state. But the fact is that under the garb of power, some parties are hell bent to disintegrate the state to suit their interests and they call themselves patriots…I request my brothers in Jammu and Ladakh to stay united at this juncture to protect the state's integrity and ensure (that the) state's identity remains intact…I appeal the people of Jammu and Ladakh to protect the state's integrity".
Ironically, while appealing to the people of Jammu and Ladakh that they should work with the Hurriyat Conference for the unity and integrity of the state, he also declared that the "Hurriyat led by him will reach out to all the pro-freedom leaders to devise a strategy to counter the nefarious designs of some parties to polarize the situation in Jammu & Kashmir".
The Mirwaiz has, it appears, lost his balance of mind. How could he simultaneously ask the people of Jammu and Ladakh to work for the unity and integrity of the state and declare that he would reach out to all the anti-India elements in the Valley to create an environment calculated to get Jammu & Kashmir separated from India? The people of Jammu province and Ladakh are known for their unflinching commitment to India. Complete integration of the state into India and full empowerment within India and under the Indian Constitution have been their battle-cries and watchwords since October 1947 and the 2014 poll verdict in Jammu and Ladakh only reflected that. They have consistently maintained that they shall not compromise their stand on India and that they would not leave any stone unturned to achieve their goals of national integration and empowerment.
The fact of the matter is that the Mirwaiz further alienated the people of Jammu and Ladakh by appealing to them to make common cause with those in Kashmir who consider Jammu & Kashmir and disputed territory and who say that the only way to end the unrest in Kashmir is the grant of right to self-determination to the people of the state. The people of the state have exercised their right to self-determination umpteen times by taking part in the electoral exercises, including the one which took place in the state between November 25 and December 20, 2014, in which over 66 per cent of the eligible voters participated with great enthusiasm to elect representatives through who they wanted themselves to represented in the assembly, the highest law-making body in the state.
The Mirwaiz and his ilk would do well to accept the stark reality that the people of Jammu and Ladakh are great patriots, that they hate and despise the separatist ideology and that they will not allow anyone in the Valley or elsewhere to tinker with the Indian sovereignty in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The sooner he does so the better. Not to do so or to continue to talk about the right to self-determination would only ensure the disintegration of the state sooner than later. Jammu and Ladakh are the nation's backbone in the state. This is the STARK REALITY. |
