J&K has 25.33% drop out rate against national average of 14.54%

Srinagar, Aug 25 : Against the national average of 14.54 per cent drop outs, Jammu and Kashmir has 25.33 per cent as per Unified District Information System of Education (UDISE).
Parents in the Kashmir valley had reservation to admit their daughters in the institutions where co-education is being imparted.
In a written reply to a question by Syed Naeem Akhtar Andrabi of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Legislative Council on the opening day of the session today Minister for School Education said the ratio of the drop out rate in Secondary Education of Jammu and Kashmir is 25.33 per cent as compared to the national level drop out of 14.54 per cent as per UDISE).
The reply said lack of awareness and reservation of the parents to admit their daughters in the co-education institutions is one of the major reason of higher dropout rate in the Kashmir valley as compared to Jammu region.
Besides economic awareness is also one of the basic reason, the minister said.
He said Anantnag district in south Kashmir has highest number of drop outs 46.61 per cent, followed by Badgam 43.18 per cent, Kulgam 40.71 per cent, Kupwara 39.30 per cent, Bandipora 39.91 per cent, Baramulla 38.17 per cent, Shopian 36.37 per cent, Ganderbal 35.66 per cent, Pulwama 29.02 per cent and lowest 10.16 per cent in Srinagar.
The reply said 22876 habitations are covered by secondary schooling facility within five kms distance. However, there are still 6618 habitations without secondary schooling facility, the reply said.
