Cong sends list of candidates to party high command | LA Polls | | Crucial meet ignores issues confronting coalition Fazal Khan Srinagar, Aug 25: The Congress party today recommended the names of the candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections to the party high command. Sources told Early Times a crucial meeting of the Congress party was held here this morning and all the top leaders including the JKPCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz and former Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad attended the meeting. They said that Democratic Party (N) Chairman and the Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir also arrived as a "surprise guest" and participated in the meeting. A source said that names of the candidates for the all 87-Assembly segments were discussed threadbare. "It was decided unanimously that all the sitting MLAs would be given the mandate. For other Assembly segments names of three to four candidates were forwarded to the party high command," the source added. He said the final call over nominating the candidates would be taken by the party high command. "I was asked to suggest a probable candidate for our constituency who would be given mandate in the coming Assembly elections and I proposed a few names. Other leaders did the same," said a senior Congress leader. A source said that party leaders remained tightlipped over the issues confronting the present NC-Cong coalition, including the issue of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah not calling the Cabinet meet and NC leaders skipping the Coordination Committee meeting. He said that many second rung Congress leaders were made to wait outside and were strictly told that meeting is confined to Assembly elections only. "When a few leaders insisted that some important issues need to be discussed, the former Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told them that term of the present coalition is coming to an end. He asked leaders to prepare themselves for the forth coming polls and stop wasting time on non-issues," the source added. He said the other issue which came up for the discussion during the meeting was the poor performance of the Congress candidates in the recently held Parliamentary elections. "Party leaders agreed to the fact that lack of coordination among them and pre-poll alliance with National Conference back fired," the source added. "Many party leaders endorsed the statement of the JKPCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz that Congress faced the wrath of people due to it joining hands with National Conference. Participants assured the leaders that they would activate their ground level workers and would reach out to the masses to ensure that party doesn't face rout like it faced in the Parliamentary elections," the source added. The JKPCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz while talking to Early Times said, "We cannot disclose our poll strategy till party high command clears the list of candidates. Meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and many issues were discussed." He refused to comment on when would Congress release its first list of candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls.
