TOP STORY OF THE DAY
UT fined common cause with Autonomy
10/26/2008 11:11:15 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 26: It was the demand of Union Territory which led to a complete unanimity in Leh in 2002 elections and the representatives were sent to legislative assembly without any election at all. Six years later, Leh is all set to witness a highly competitive election where the Union Territory slogan is forging a common ground with the politics of Greater Autonomy. Nawang Rigzin Jora and Pinto Narbo did not have to face an election in Leh and Nobra constituencies respectively in 2002 elections as no candidate had stood against them. It was a show of rare unanimity. Local units of all political parties were unanimously dissolved to give shape to the Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF). The political spectrum not only Jammu and Kashmir but across country was left surprised by the people of Leh when these two candidates did not have to face any election at all to enter the legislative assembly. Six years later, politics in the trans-Himalayan enclave has become more competitive than ever and more complex than ever. Local units of almost all regional and nation...

No big sale this Diwali
10/26/2008 11:10:47 PM
MUNISH GUPTA JAMMU, Oct 26: Diwali is one such keenly awaited festival of the year where people go shopping in the big discount season. However, this Diwali, bogged down by recession, the major companies, particularly dealing in home appliances have disappointed the shoppers with no major schemes on offering. Small gift shops are though making brisk sales but showroom owners across shopping plazas and business centers are sitting idle for most part of the day as the big brands, facing crunch, have decided not to offer any Diwali bonanza or lucrative offer to push sales of home appliances, electronic goods or home durables. Generally, it is seen that big companies in the bazaar announce ...

How the Valley was won
DATELINE OCT 27, 1947
10/26/2008 11:08:46 PM
JAGMOHAN On October 27, 1947, a small contingent of the Indian armed forces landed at Srinagar airport and saved Kashmir for India by a whisker. On the 62nd anniversary of this historic event, it would be instructive to reflect upon the past, present and future of the Kashmir problem. At the time of the Indian Independence Act, 1947, the political stage of Kashmir was crowded with a variety of actors. There was the National Conference, headed by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. It dominated the Valley but had limited influence in Jammu and Ladakh. It had developed close rapport with the leaders of the Indian National Congress, particularly Jawaharlal Nehru, but its equation with the Muslim Lea...

BJP: Is the party over?
10/26/2008 11:08:13 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 26: Aiming high to consolidate the grounds prepared by the two-month long agitation on land row, the top heavy leadership of the BJP seems to have forgotten that once there used to be an organization called Bhartiya Janta Party situated at Pandit Prem Nath Dogra Bhawan. Till the middle of June, the BJP was more or less a disciplined organization with growing cadre and responsible office bearers. The campaign of regional discrimination and nationalist sentiment which ran along the Amarnath shrine land agitation saw many parties like Congress and National Conference being pushed to the wall. Apparently this gave the BJP leadership an opportunity to see a clear...

Kashmir rail track alignment changed
After Rs 700 Cr loss, Railways eye Rs 1000 Cr gains
10/26/2008 11:01:58 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 26: Ready to face a cumulative loss of some Rs 700 Crore but with hopes to save Rs 1000 Crore, the Northern Railways has mulled a change in alignment to the railway track connecting Kashmir with rest of the country. As per the new plan, which is likely to be approved, the number of bridges comes down drastically from 93 to just nine and tunnels from 64 to ten. In the previous plan, the railway track between Udhampur and Qazigund was 85 per cent through tunnels and bridges and only 15 per cent on the open surface. As per the new design of alignment, the track length has also come for a shortening by nearly half of the previous plan. Now the distance between K...
