JAMMU, Oct 26: Diwali is one such keenly awaited festival of the year where people go shopping in the big discount season. However, this Diwali, bogged down by recession, the major companies, particularly dealing in home appliances have disappointed the shoppers with no major schemes on offering.
Small gift shops are though making brisk sales but showroom owners across shopping plazas and business centers are sitting idle for most part of the day as the big brands, facing crunch, have decided not to offer any Diwali bonanza or lucrative offer to push sales of home appliances, electronic goods or home durables.

JAMMU, Oct 26: After receiving alleged threat letter from banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) has today demanded enhanced security cover to all its the members.
Leela Karan Sharma, convener SAYSS told reporters that earlier he received three threatening calls but he took it lightly “but yesterday I received a letter from SIMI threatening of dire consequences and one of the copy of the threatening letter was sent to IG Jammu K Rajindera for more security”.
Shooting salvos at the politicians and other top job officers he said that they have adequate security where as he has been given only two PSOs.

SRINAGAR, Oct 26: One person was on Sunday killed and eight others injured in police firing in Baramullah town in north Kashmir in the wake of protests over alleged high-handedness of security forces, prompting authorities to clamp curfew.
Irfan Ahmad, a university student, was killed on-the-spot when he was hit by a bullet in his chest during the firing by security forces after baton charge and teargas shelling failed to control the violent mob in the town, 55 km from Srinagar, official sources said.
Eight persons were injured including four with bullet wounds as authorities imposed curfew in the town this afternoon to control the situation, they said.

JAMMU, Oct 26: Ready to face a cumulative loss of some Rs 700 Crore but with hopes to save Rs 1000 Crore, the Northern Railways has mulled a change in alignment to the railway track connecting Kashmir with rest of the country. As per the new plan, which is likely to be approved, the number of bridges comes down drastically from 93 to just nine and tunnels from 64 to ten. In the previous plan, the railway track between Udhampur and Qazigund was 85 per cent through tunnels and bridges and only 15 per cent on the open surface.
