TOP STORY OF THE DAY
What if J&K were USA and Omar were Obama
4/20/2008 11:14:34 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 20 If Jammu and Kashmir were America and Omar Abdullah were barrack Obama, millions of people would have today hooked up to the internet surfing blogs and leaving comments. But alas! No two way communication here. By his own admission, the National Conference president Omar Abdullah says that Jammu and Kashmir is nowhere close to the technology revolution which has taken on the country. Therefore, an element of frustration is but natural, as Omar Abdullah captions one of his posts on the blog. For the readers in a state like Jammu and Kashmir where internet penetration is next to negligible, all this must be sounding surprising as what this newspaper is talking about. Well, to keep the people informed about its policies and programs, past, present and future, the National Conference has launched a website which can be accessed at www.jknc.org. Interestingly, the star attraction on the National Conference website is the blog of Omar Abdullah whose reputation of being an internet buff and facebook hooker is no secret. As politics now comes to b...

The Private In Public
4/20/2008 11:13:44 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 20 A major difference between the Indian and Western politicians is about their personal lives. In India, politicians keep their private lives deeply veiled until they turn out to be scandalous. But in western countries, the politicians share with public even the smallest things as what they prefer eating and where they shop often –it makes a personal connection with electorate which not make them celebrities but also fetch them more votes. Omar Abdullah’s blog at the National Conference site is a welcome step in that direction as it breaks the jinx of Indian political mindset and brings the private into public. Omar though is not the first Indian politi...

Rank controversy at Northern Command, General goes on protest leave
4/20/2008 11:10:49 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 20 Most strategic and prestigious formations of Indian Army, the Udhampur based Northern Command refuses to come out of controversies of ranks and files. After a tough battle which the then Commander Lt Gen HS Panag fought to finally lose out to the Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor, yet another General has proceeded on leave protesting orders of serving under his junior. It is reliably leant that Lt. Gen. P.C. Katoch, the number two at the Udhampur-based command, proceeded on 60-day leave after Lt. Gen P.C. Bharadwaj was elevated as its chief in March. Katoch is a year senior in service to Bharadwaj and had commanded a unit during the Indian Peace Kee...

‘Put Kashmir aside, make move on trade’
4/20/2008 11:10:03 PM
ET DESK Jammu | Apr 20 Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani has said that Pakistan's insistence on describing the Kashmir problem as the core issue in bilateral ties would not achieve anything and wanted other matters like commerce to precede it. Advani, the leader of opposition in Parliament, said although he encouraged the composite dialogue process between India and Pakistan, he believed that other issues, like information and commerce, should precede Kashmir. "Kashmir later," he said in an interview to Dawn News, Pakistan's leading English news channel. Although the Kashmir problem would take time to resolve, Advani was optimistic that a day would come when India and P...

Chase this vegetarian dog…..!
4/20/2008 11:07:40 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 20 In Journalism College the aspiring scribes are taught that it is no news if a dog bites a man as only the way round can make news. Nevertheless, without biting or barking either way today it’s still dog’s news. The vegetarian dog which protects against all adversaries the life, livestock and establishments of his masters and can pick up a fight even with a tiger –if need be –the Bakerwali dog is reported to be going extinct. True, as it was taught in the journalism college, it would have made no news if the Bakerwali dog was not famous world over for qualities of its loyalty to master and strength of a Jaguar. In their lonely fight against militants...
