SRINAGAR, Aug 3: Even after Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, today assured Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, that the Centre would consider the state’s demand of establishing two Central Universities, one each in Kashmir and Jammu, “passionately”, Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Kapil Sibal, is understood to have made it clear that setting up two separate universities in the state would not be possible at the moment. National Conference-led coalition government has, consequently, begun to find a way out to the fast brewing crisis by assessing the possibility of establishing the university’s campuses both in Srinagar and Jammu, with a Buddhist Studies Centre at Leh.

Chidambaram, Union Home Minister here today and discussed the situation prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir following failure of the state administration to run the affairs resulting into anarchy. Pune, Aug 3: A 14 year girl in Pune has become the first victim of the swine flu epidemic in India. Three more persons had tested positive for H1N1 virus on Sunday, taking the total number of Swine flu cases in Pune to 101, health officials said.
The fresh cases included two students and a 26-year-old youth who returned from Germany, they said adding that the patients had been admitted to isolation ward of civic Naidu hospital. As many as 64 Swine flu cases in the city have been treated and discharged so far, officials said. The number of H1N1 infection in Maharashtra now stands at 147.

New Delhi, Aug 3: The country has a total of 16,626 colleges and 483 universities, the government said Monday.
"The number of universities and university-level institutions as on July 15 is 483, and of the nearly 20,000 colleges, data is available for 16,626 and the number of aided colleges among them is 8,443," Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said.
NAAC: A total of 4,802 higher educational institutions have the accreditation of National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

New Delhi Aug 3: The UPA government was on Monday forced to differ the introduction of the Judges’ Assets Bill in the Rajya Sabha owing to strong resistance from the Opposition parties including the Left.
The opposition parties objected to the bill, which allows judges not to make their assets public, by calling it a violation of the right to equality.
Referring to the Section 91 of the Constitution, BJP’s leader of the house, Arun Jaitley said, “There cannot two laws. On one hand you ask people contesting elections to declare their assets and on the other hand you allow judges (those who are holding public office) not to make their assets public.”

Kathua, Aug 3: One woman was killed and 17 others were injured, ten of them seriously, when a bus skidded off the road and fell down into a deep gorge in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said.
The bus which was on its way from Billawar to Kadli skidded off the road near Kadli, about 100 kms from here, and fell into the 200-meter deep gorge at around 1200 hours, they said.
One woman died on the spot and 17 others were injured, ten of them seriously, they said, adding the injured have been shifted to sub-district hospital at Billawar for treatment.
Earlier reports said 25 passengers were injured in the accident.

Srinagar, Aug 3: The Chhari Mubarak, holy mace of Lord Shiva reached Sheshnag, 3352 metres above sea level, this afternoon after covering a 12-km hilly track from Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on the traditional Pahalgam route.
After a night’s halt at Sheshnag on the occasion of "Tryodashi", at a height of 3352 metres above sea level, the holy mace will leave for Panjtarni, 3657 metres above sea level for a night’s stop here tomorrow.
The custodian of the Charri, Mahant Deepender Giri, carrying the holy mace, led the devotees, including good number of Sadhus, to march from Chadanwari to Sheshnag to cover the track on foot this morning.

JAMMU, August 3: The summer capital city of Srinagar alone consumes more electricity than whole of the 10 districts of Jammu put together. During the year 2008-09, the Srinagar district consumed 1.90 billion units.
In contrast, all the 10 districts of the Jammu region, including Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur, Reasi, Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar collectively consumed only 1.87 billion units of power, according to official figures.
