| EC to meet Governor | | Poll timing still uncertain, schedule for five states being announced | | | Early Times Report

With no decision yet on the election timing in Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission of India will be now holding a meeting with the state Governor NN Vohra towards the end of this month to have an assessment of the ground situation.
Barring the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, the Election Commission is gearing up to announce the dates for elections in five other states of Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Mizoram in the first week of October.
Counting will be completed and results announced in these states by December 5 as per a tentative calendar drawn up by the commission.
The commission has, however, not yet given up its plans to hold the J&K elections as well, but separately.
Pending a final round of discussions with the state governor by the end of this month, a source said the commission "is already in the process of finalising the poll dates, deployment of the Central forces and observers in J&K."

Pakistani authorities have said that India has closed water flow in the Chenab River which it claimed was making a water shortage in the country more severe.
The alleged "water blockade" by India could adversely affect kharif crops, particularly cotton and sugarcane which are in maturity stage and require final watering, and the sowing of rabi crops early next month, reports said.

Four security personnel and a Hizbul Mujahideen militant were killed on Monday in two gunbattles in Poonch and Ramban districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Acting on a tip-off, army troops and police launched a joint cordon and search operation in Tarawali forest belt in Surankote on Sunday night, Sub Divisional Police Officer of Surankote Parbeet Singh said.
During the operation, militants opened fire to which the security personnel retaliated, Singh said.
"No militant has been killed so far in the encounter," he added.
