| Threat of dissolution of Assembly recedes in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 11: Chances for dissolution of Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir to be followed by fresh elections have receded after NC leadership agreed to discuss the issue of constitution of Kargil Hill Development Council during the next meeting of the coordination committee. Party sources said that when the NC leadership staked claim for forming the Council in Kargil, senior Congress functionaries in Delhi cautioned Omar Abdullah and his father, Farooq Abdullah, against the consequences of the move. Sources said that Omar Abdullah has received hint of the Congress plan to withdraw support which could have left the NC leadership with no other option but to quit the Government. According to these sources, Farooq, who has been right from the inception opposed to snapping ties with the Congress, had warned his son and other senior party leaders against any move which could annoy the Congress. Reports said that the main worry for the NC leadership was that any retaliation by the Congress in the shape of withdrawal of support could open doors for Congress-PDP alliance which may seal chances of the National Conference for retaining power. According to these reports, the NC leadership has realized that by keeping the Congress in good humour it could prevent the PDP from regaining power in Jammu and Kashmir. This assessment is based on reports that the next election too may throw up a hung Assembly. And since the possibilities of NC sharing power with the PDP were bleak it was only the Congress that could play the role of a Government maker. |
