| Tawi Golf course becomes private estate of Tourism Department | | | ET Report JAMMU, Sept 11: The Jammu Tawi golf course has been closed for the use of common people by the tourism department. Even no membership has been provided to any one by the department. The Jammu Tawi golf course was inaugurated in April 2011 during a day long function which remained a low key affair despite inviting big guns of state politics to participate in the event. People of Jammu were very enthusiastic after the completion of nine-hole golf course, which they thought will invite larger participation in the game in the winter capital of the state. After the inauguration, only registered golfers were allowed and Common Jammuite were not allowed to enter the arena. Sources said that restriction have been imposed on people willing to get a feel of city's only golf course outside Army and BSF. "There are few people behind the closure of golf course who don't want promotion of Jammu Tawi golf course because it will affect their business somewhere else," sources added. In April 2011, the first nine-hole area of the golf course was inaugurated and now the work on next nine-hole area is underway. Though the ongoing work does not impact the existing completed area, still common people are not allowed to visit there. Even journalists visiting the golf course to see the activities, are denied entry, defeating the very purpose of setting up a golf course in public sector. Interestingly, tourism department, the nodal agency for the upkeep of the golf course has never invited any applications for membership, nor devised any criteria or fee structure for the aspiring golfers. |
