| Fire Services purchased ineffectual machinery worth crores | | Suggestions of serving, retired officers ignored | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 11: As the Jammu and Kashmir State has achieved dubious distinction of being ranked the most corrupt State in the country with huge chunk of funds received from centre for development of the militancy ravaged State going down the deep pockets of the corrupt officers and politicians, Department of Fire and Emergency Services is no exception. Reports suggest that the department of fire and emergency services had purchased machinery worth crores without proper studies and analysis and worthless machinery has never been put to use. Sources said the machinery was purchased by some top officers and bureaucrats eyeing huge cuts despite the general opinion of the organization that such type of costly machinery was not needed for the State. The machinery was purchased despite a delegation of the senior officers meeting the then Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and giving him a written memorandum asking him that the purchase of such machinery was not needed for the J&K and crores of rupees spent on its purchase will be blocked unnecessary, sources added. Sources said going against this opinion some of the top officers and bureaucrats, purchased Snorkel two units for the State and both are lying idle at present. One machine costs Rs 5.50 crore. This has been done when already four units of these machines existed in the State and their services were also not properly utilized, sources added. Sources said there are no garages for keeping these machines and they are lying on road. The utility of these machines can be in states where there are multi storey buildings like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkatta and not in Srinagar or Jammu where there few such multi storey complexes exist and where the buildings have proper escape routes. Sources said four machines existing in the State already include two hydraulic units and two Turn Table Ladder (TTL) but all of these four machines were lying idle while the orgnisation purchased two more units. Sources said the organization is also facing the man power shortage and out of 3500 posts in the J&K Fire Services 1000 are lying vacant but no steps have been taken to fill up the same as the Department has not yet over come the Tral Pulwama recruitment effect after which the performance of the organization is under clout due to the dubious and controversial role. |
