NC in complete disarray
Drama in Kargil

Rustam
JAMMU, Sept 11: The National Conference, which has never ever upheld democratic values, is in complete disarray. Its leadership is making a mockery of itself. One day, the party president, Farooq Abdullah, says that the NC is not in the race as far as the issue of formation of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Kargil is concerned opining that the NC lost the council election because of its own misdoings. He makes this statement seemingly to keep the NC-Congress coalition intact. And he makes this nice statement in the wake of the strong reaction from the Congress to the NC working president and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's controversial decision to nominate his four persons to the Kargil council to manipulate the required numbers and recapture the Kargil council.
The Very next day, Farooq Abdullah's brother and Omar Abdullah's uncle Mustafa Kamaal attacks the JKPCC leadership, questions the Congress's victory in the Kargil elections and pooh-poohs the JKPCC chief for his statement that the party will go to the court to seek justice. And the same day, the NC manipulates majority through horse trading and stakes claim to the council. And the very next day, Omar Abdullah and AICC general secretary and in-charge Jammu and Kashmir Congress Ambika Soni reportedly would meet in New Delhi to sort out the difference so that the coalition remains intact. One report in this regard said: "She (Ambika) said Congress High Command was in constant touch with National Conference and local Congress leadership. Soni is believed to have met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also who flew to New Delhi to pacify the situation. I don't believe in presuming the things. I am optimistic and am hopeful that the issue would be sorted out amicably". It is strange that he would not discuss the issue with the chairman of the Congress-NC Coordination Committee Saif-ud-Din Soz and, instead, would discuss the issue with Ambika Soni.
And the same day, two more developments unfold and both connected with the NC. One: "Political Advisor to Chief Minster and senior party leader from Kargil, Qamar Ali Akhoon reportedly says that "we are sure things will ease up and everything will be alright," but evades "a direct reply whether the party has withdrawn the controversial nomination of four members". "Everything will be known on the floor of the house," he only reportedly says. Two: NC leader and senior Minister in the Omar Abdullah's rag-tag Council of Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar tells a local news agency that "all the party councillors have withdrawn their claim and the councilors have been asked to adhere to the party high command's decision". "We have talked to the party councillors and told them that they should adhere to Dr Farooq Abdullah's decision after which they have withdrawn the claim," Sagar is quoted as saying by one local news agency. The report also suggests that Farooq will be in Srinagar on Wednesday to "assess the situation" and that "dust will settle down in few days".
What is it that is going on? The people of Kargil inflicted a crushing defeat on the NC last month. The NC must accept the verdict gracefully and allow the people of Kargil to have a council of their choice.
