Asia Hotel crossing becomes death trap for commuters

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 13: The Asia hotel crossing on Jammu-Pathankote national highway is becoming a potential death trap for commuters as traffic cops remain absent from the spot most of the time during the day. This crossing was opened by traffic department on May 26 after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah threw open the fourth bridge on river Tawi, connecting Belichrana with Bhagwati Nagar. Since then vehicles coming from new bridge are taking turn on this Asia hotel turn without any precautions, this crossing is proving dangerous for commuters as no traffic lights have been installed by the traffic department and also the traffic cops stationed there are not visible on ground. The high risk time is when schools get closed during the afternoon and all buses and other traffic move from one place to another. This road becomes one of the most congested roads in the city and taking a turn near Asia hotel without having traffic cops and traffic lights in place is fatal. Moreover, the start of construction work of Vikram Chowk-Satwari flyover has also narrowed down the road and opening of this police line crossing near hotel Asia is becoming dangerous every passing day. "This turn is most fatal turn in Jammu city at present. When school buses move with other traffic, congestion increases but absence of traffic light and cops from the scene make the movement difficult and risky," said Vikas Sharma, a businessman of Rehari area of Jammu city. Though for past few days, traffic cops remain stationed there but only for little time and only when VIP movement is on the road. A senior traffic police official acknowledged this danger but put the onus on management who hasn't been able to put in place traffic lights during past more than three months."The traffic department has to streamline the traffic but when management opens new turns which are risky, we can't do much. Still we are putting our best efforts to make arrangements there but loopholes remain there," the official added. There are scores of other crossings in Jammu city, which are becoming potential threat to lives of people despite having installed traffic light, which are not functioning now. The J&K traffic department is sleeping over it and not performing it duty save lives of people.
