6 students booked for attempt to murder; VC rusticates 2 PSA members, suspends 4 | Violence in JU Campus | | Sumit Sharma JAMMU, Sept 13: Six students were booked on attempt to murder case in Gandhi Nagar police station, while Vice Chancellor of JU Prof MP Ishar rusticated 2 students and suspended four girl students besides ordering a departmental inquiry to ascertain involvement of girl students in violence. Official sources said that Jammu University today rusticated two students and banned Progressive Students Association (PSA) after they attacked a scholar Kapil Shastri of Sanskrit Department leading to severe injuries to him. About six students were booked under sections 307,147,148 RPC against FIR No 226/13. Three were arrested following statement of an injured fellow student. Thew injured was rushed to hospital. Eyewitnesses said the violence broke out following yesterday's incident in activists from Gujjar Bakerwal Students Welfare Association (GWSWA) and PSA activists were allegedly thrashed by a group of students. Pertinent to mention that on Thursday some students including Kapil Shastri and his three associates opened the gate of Jammu University which was shut by the students on hunger strike triggering clash between the two. The hunger strike was led by Talib Hussain of Law Department. Earlier, VC assured the students on strike that their demands would be taken up with the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in a meeting supposed to be held in October. On Friday, at 12 pm Talib Hussain and PSA student M.S Bhatti accompanied by a group of students including four girl students called out Shastri from Sanskrit department and thrashed him with fits and blow and sticks which caused profound bleeding. Soon after the incident Jammu University took action and rusticated two students. The rusticated students include M.S. Bhatti of the Department of Political Science and Talib Hussain of Law Department. Those who were booked by Gandhi Nagar police have been identified as Suresh Kumar son of Mohn Lal of Udhampur, Rahul Kumr son of Ramesh chander of Kathua, Rampaul son Gyan Chand of Reasi, Ghulam Hussain son of Sadeeq Hussain of Bathindi, Raghav Sharma son of PP Sharma of Roopnagar and MS Bhatti son of Mohd Sadeeq Bhatti of Kathua. Meanwhile in a late development, police also booked three girl students under section 307 RPC and detained them. The same girl students were later suspended and their entry in the campus till the conclusion of inquiry banned. The suspended students include Sakshi student of department of Political Science daughter of Omkar Raina, a Sub Inspector posted in Nowabad police station, Sunandhini, Law School student, daughter of Arun Sharma posted in forest department as Chief Forest Officer, Marvi Salathia, Dept. of Political Science daughter of Reeta Salathia of Kathua and Kathleen Kour, Law School student. Pertinently GBSWA activists were demanding establishment of Gojri and Pahari Research Centre at Jammu University while, PSA activists supported the demand. "Yesterdays GBSWA had lodged three complains at Dean Students Welfare against Kapil Shastri but the authorities ignored the complaints," said a scholar wishing anonymity. The Vice-Chancellor M.P. Singh Ishar constituted high level committee of senior Professors headed by Prof Keshav Sharma, Controller of Examination to probe into the matter. "Taking strong exception to the violence in the campus, the administration banned entry of erring students into the campus. Four students have been rusticated and four suspended for the violence," said a JU press note. |
