JAMMU, Sept 13: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has ruled out early Assembly elections saying that the coalition Government would complete its full term of six years. He was speaking to newsmen at the sidelines of inauguration of Rs. 3,113 crore Baglihar-II project.
"This is wishful thinking," said a political analyst. According to him, the Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held early next year. "Elections in Jammu and Kashmir require huge security apparatus. Besides the increase in militant attacks in the Valley predict that the authorities will prefer to go for the exercise with the parliamentary elections. The Government of India will not afford to take the risk of holding two elections in a volatile state and that too in a span of six months," he said.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Panther's Party also point to early Assembly elections. The PDP and the PP have been demanding dismissal of the Omar led Government for quite some time now.
Congress leader and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad, had during a party convention on August 31 hinted at early Assembly elections while at the same time appearing to rule out any pre-poll alliance with NC, according to reports in a section of the local media.
Assembly polls could be held any moment and there was very little time left for the exercise; he was quoted as having said. Much weight has been assigned to Azad's statement.
The Congress party is not happy with the coalition Government. Time and again they have made clear that staying in the coalition was a political compulsion. "We do not want to leave the Government on a bad note. A few months more and we will form our own Government", a Saif-ud-Din Soz loyalist said while expressing dismay over seating arrangement in Shalimar gardens for Zubin Mehta's concert. Soz, it may be mentioned, was made to sit in the 15th row.
