EARLY TIMES REPORT Udhampur, Sept 30 : Due strike of transporter, the public transport remained off the roads, which led a huge in-convenience among the public transport users. The strike call was given by transporters seeking 40 per cent increase in passenger fares. Chairman, Transport Association Banihal Route, Nasar Husan, Transport Association Udhampur District senior vice-president Sudash Kumar said that private public transporters have been facing various taxes fees. "Hike in prices of petroleum products and implementation of Passenger Welfare Fund has adversely hit the transport industry. Since the last hike in passenger fares the price of diesel has gone up by almost Rs. 6 and price of petrol has increased by Rs. 17", they said. They further said, "Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has also increased the rate of third party insurance from April. The business of transport has become uneconomical. Now, under the prevailing circumstances, there was urgent need to review the fares."They warned that if the government failed to take any decision within a week, the transporters would go on an indefinite strike from next week.
