| Omar's statement on accession triggers resentment from BJP, NPP legislators | | Accuse Omar of supplementing agenda of anti-national elements | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's recent interaction with a delegation of European Union (EU) in which he said that Jammu & Kashmir has acceded and not merged with Union of India came in for sharp criticism from Jammu based legislators of Bharatiya Janta Party and National Panthers Party during the first day of the autumn session of state legislature that began here today. Speaking during the obituary references on D C Prashant, Ghulam Nabi Shora and Daya Krishan Kotwal, NPP leader and MLA Ram Nagar, Harshdev Singh said that Omar's statement has strengthened the anti-national elements present in the state. Harshdev said that statements like the one made by Omar provide shot in the arm to the militants and they carry out attacks on police and security forces personnel. "Whenever anybody questions the merger of state with the country the anti-national elements get strengthened and they get a boost. We will not tolerate statements issued with respect to state's merger with country and the message should go out loud and clear to one and all. It is due to such statements that incidents like those of Kathua and Samba occur. As such it is important that we don't issue statements that create confusion among people about state's accession with Union of India," said Harshdev. The NPP MLA also took a dig at the NC's renewed demand for repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state. He said the Act provides security forces a shield to carry out action against militants. He said the state government's proposal to repeal AFSPA from Samba and Kathua districts in the first phase would spell doom after the recent attacks on a police station and army camp which claimed lives of 10 persons. "The militants infiltrated from across and entered 35-40 kilometres into our territory and then carried out attacks on police station and army camp. This clearly shows that there was intelligence failure and the security apparatus was caught napping. Such incidents are a warning to us and we should take appropriate measures so that such incidents do not occur in future," said Harshdev. Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader and MLA Nagrota, Jugal Kishore said that politicians should refrain from making statements that question accession of Jammu & Kashmir with Union of India. Jugal said such statements create confusion and strengthen anti-national elements both within and outside the state. "Samba is considered to peaceful district and state government wants to start repeal of AFSPA from this district. However, the recent attack on army camp in this district and attack on Hira Nagar police station in Kathua district should open the eyes of state government. AFSPA cannot be repealed from state since it provides cover to security forces for taking effective action against the militants," said Jugal. The BJP legislator also took a dig at the Article 370 saying that it has led to problems instead of providing benefits to the people. He advocated abrogation of the Article saying that same would lead to development of state in overall context. He said unemployment has assumed daunting proportions in the state while as terrorism has gained ground as well. Independent legislator Ashwini Kumar said that AFSPA is important since it helps the security forces personnel to act against the anti-national elements. Ashwini condemned the militant attacks on army camp in Samba and police station Hira Nagar in Kathua district that claimed lives of 10 persons. |
