SPORTS REPORTER JAMMU, Sept 30: Government Degree College (GDC) Rajouri among six teams qualified for the second round of pre-quarterfinals beating their opponents on the opening day of the annual inter-college (men and women) kabaddi tournament, organised by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu (JU) on the campus fields, here today. Earlier, in the inaugural match, GDC Rajouri fought from behind against GDC Rajouri to confirm their berth in the next round. Trailing by 10 points with half time score being 05-15, GDC Rajouri faught back thereby stunned R S Pura boys making it a fine seven points win (26-19). Similarly, GDC Kilotarian registered a comfortable 10 points win against GDC Bhaderwah. The GDC Billawar also won their match outplaying GDC Hiranagar by 10 points while GDC Udhampur defeated GGM Science College by a big margin of 20 points. The combined side of PG Departments defeated GDC Thanamandi by 27 points and GDC Poonch got walkover GDC Ramnagar. In another scheduled match, both R K Degree College and GDC Bishnah failed to report the venue. Meanwhile, both the scheduled matches in women's section could not take place due to failure of opponent sides. In one such match GDC Kathua awarded walkover GDC Samba while both GDC Reasi and Bhargava Degree College, suppose to meet each other, failed to report. Today's matches were officiated by the technical penal including Ankush Gupta, Manpreet Singh, Keshav Singh, Ankush Sharma, Anil Kumar and Gagan Kumar. Earlier, the tournament was declared open by Registrar, JU, Prof Manoj K Dhar, who was chief guest. Prof Dhar interacted with the teams and appreciated the boys for reporting the venue despite the strike by the transporters. Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof. Dhian Singh Bhau, who presided, was all praise for the participants for the zeal and enthusiasm. Among others present were Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) from GGM Science College, GDC RS Pura, GDC Poonch, GDC Thanamandi, GDC Kilotrian, GDC Bhaderwah, GDC Rajouri, GDC Billawar, GDC Hiranagar, GDC Udhampur (Boys) and GDC Kathua as also.
