| Singh-Sharif talks: Kashmiri separatists fear being sidelined | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 30: Believing that they were being ignored and sidelined by both New Delhi and Islamabad Kashmiri separatists have started adopting pro-Nawaz Sharif stance to motivate Pak Prime Minister to opt for triangular talks for the settlement of the Kashmir issue. Sources within the separatists, both moderates and the hardliners, say that soon after the talks between Nawaz Sharif and Manmohan Singh, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Kashmir separatists felt that the two sides had totally sidelined them which could result in marked decline in their relevance. According to these sources, senior separatist leaders have renewed their support for Nawaz sharif in a bid to encourage Islamabad to favour triangular talks on settlement of the Kashmir issue so that in future parleys separatists too were involved. In support of their coention sources cited the latest statement of Syed Ali Shah Geelan, who heads the conglomerate of hardliners and Molvi Umar Farooq, who leads an amalgam of moderates. Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani Sunday said while Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif spoke about "hard reality", his counterpart Manmohan Singh "overlooked facts" during their respective speeches at United Nations General Assembly. Sharif had sought the UN intervention and urged the world body to honour its own resolutions on Kashmir while Singh had said there can never ever be any compromise on the territorial integrity of India of which Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part. "We welcome the statement of Nawaz Sharif where he said that Kashmir issue is to be resolved as per the UN resolutions. This is a fact which nobody can ignore. Whatever Manmohan Singh has said is because of the arrogance of power. He is trying to overlook the reality about the history of Kashmir," Geelani has said. Reacting to the speeches of the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan at the United Nations, Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday said they have started on a "wrong foot". He stressed on the need for political will to resolve Kashmir issue. Nawaz Sharif and Manmohan Singh have started on a wrong foot. Pakistan is toeing its line while India its own," he said while reacting to statement of Manmohan Singh wherein he had said "expectations need to be toned down from the meeting with his counterpart". "Nawaz Sharif's speech was relevant. He was speaking at the forum that has passed resolutions on Kashmir. Manmohan Singh's claim of Kashmir being an integral part of India was in reaction to Nawaz Sharif's speech," Mirwaiz said. He said India has to show some flexibility "and not escape the reality". "The traditional rigid approach is going to make the matters worse. Political will should be there and they should work rather than just issue statements. Kashmir is an active conflict that needs immediate attention," Maulana has stated. |
