Mir said the honorable high court has already banned the use and import of polythene in Kashmir adding that polythene is very harmful for all kinds of land, water and our forests and government has banned this all over the state here.
Earlier in the month of July, Jammu and Kashmir High Court observed that investigations should be conducted to find out why large quantity of polythene is being allowed to enter the State through Lakhanpur check post.
The Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court comprising Chief Justice, MM Kumar and Justice Mansoor Ahmad passed the order during the proceedings of the Dal lake case titled, Syed Tahir Iqbal Geelani versus State and others.
As during the proceedings Advocate General of State, Mohammad Ishaq Qadri had informed the court that 12,750 kilograms of the polythene was seized by various agencies from the entire State, the Chief Justice took serious note of the conduct of the employees of the Lakhanpur toll post.
The court observed that despite the directions and statutory ban on import and use of polythene, large quantity of polythene has been seized from around the Dal lake area and Srinagar.
While taking strong note of polythene menace, Court directed Advocate General to ascertain as to where from polythene comes into the State.
Court observed that recently a truck load of polythene was seized from Lower Munda even as under court directions no polythene is allowed into the State.
Meanwhile locals hailed the action taken by Municipality and urged the concerned officials to ensure regular market checking to make full use of cloth bags in the town and other areas as well.
"The action is appreciable but more need to be done to kill the polythene pollution, the Municipal officials should regularly check
the traders and vendors who are rampantly using and selling polythene bags" said civil society member Parvaiz Ahmad.
He added, "The authorities should also check polythene manufacturers and government should launch campaign to make the general public aware about the ill effects of polythene".
