Udhampur, Oct 10: Protesting against the keeping of road project connecting far remote areas of Saras -Basantgarh, the locals has decided to boycott elections if this road project is not constructed and demanded chief minister's intervention in this regard.
A meeting of senior citizens and members of Basantgarh Development Committee (BDC) was held in Basantgarh under the Chairmanship of Haji Ghulam Mohd. Niak in which members adopted an unanimous resolution that the people will boycott upcoming Assembly as well as Parliamentary Elections if this road is not constructed.
"The road was sanctioned by the former Minister for PWD (R&B) and Mechanical Engineering G.M Saroori on 21st of December 2009 while inaugurating the Bhopa Bridge in Bhagwah Block of Doda District, they recalled and added the former Minister gave sanction of the road on the spot and directed Superintending Engineer PWD (R&B) Division Doda and XEn PWD (R&B) Division Doda to conduct survey and submit a detailed project report for approval. They resented the DPR of the project stands completed but till date neither any tender nor departmental work started on the above said Saras-Basantgarh road. The people of the area approached XEn PWD (R&B) Division Doda several times but all in vain. Moreover the beginning portion of 2 ½ km stretch was earlier constructed by RDD way back in 1993 but due to militancy it was not abandoned. The people of the area also met the DDC Doda several times and only assurances were given to them. Even MLA Ramban Ashok Kumar claimed to have provided some amount of funds under Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for the above said road but no work was initiated on the road till date. The people alleged that the Government is making hollow claims of Development and upliftment of people living in rural and hilly areas by providing them road connectivity and other basic facilities on priority basis as the road which stands sanctioned and approved in 2009 is not constructed till date and urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister for PWD (R&B) Abdul Majid Wani to intervene in this matter.
