Rustam Jammu, Oct 10: A week-long session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature ended yesterday. Put in any amount of effort to find if the NC-Congress Government did anything substantial for the people of the State or adopt legislations calculated to improve the functioning of the Government and stem the rot, you will come out of the exercise minus everything. Nothing positive happened in those seven days. On the contrary, you would find the lawmakers from Kashmir, without any exception, indulged only in former General VK Singh-bashing, rabble-rousing and competitive communalism and separatism and the non-Congress and non-NC lawmakers from Jammu taking on their Kashmiri counterparts, holding protests in the Well and staging walkouts. These non-Congress and non-NC lawmakers from Jammu took a line different from that of their Kashmiri counterparts, defended General VK Singh, spoke for India and victims of violence in Kishtwar and played a positive role in their own way considering their small number. As for the lawmakers from the Congress party, including Ministers, they played safe but stood by the NC, which, like other Kashmir-based outfits, took on the otherwise great General VK Singh and became a party to the resolution the State legislature adopted against the former chief. Since the lawmakers from Kashmir devoted most of their time on emotive issues, no positive legislative work could be done. It is an irony that our lawmakers, instead of focusing their attention on important issues of governance, developmental issues and issues of immediate concern to the common people, wasted their time and public money on non-issues and emotive issues, thus leaving the people in the lurch. It would be only proper to say that the people have lost their faith in the system and this negative attitude of theirs doesn't augur well for the political class. |
