| Abrupt breakdown poses questions about efficacy of traffic signal system in Srinagar | | | Javed Shah SRINAGAR, Oct 10: The installation of traffic signals in the summer capital of state is yet to achieve desired results as majority of signals break down at any point of time during a day thus causing huge inconvenience to the people at large. This causes frequent traffic jams to leading to unwarranted delay for the commuters. In the absence of traffic police cops the whole system goes awry as and when a signal breaks down. People try to take lead over each other in such a situation and most of the times this results into accidents leading to fatal casualties. The expensive utilization of funds on the installation of traffic signals has become a joke as beggars utilize the signals to their maximum advantage. In 2012 it was not for the first time that traffic signals were introduced in Srinagar as in 1978 the signals were introduced in the city by then state government led by National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. That time traffic signals worked for only a month and if the adherence by people continues to be like it is then fate of new installed signals cannot be different."Mad rush of unprecedented number of vehicles have made life miserable in the city particularly during mornings and evenings. Traffic signals came as a welcome relief at least for the pedestrians as they could walk on roads without any fear from the motorists. However, one and half years down the line the expenditure seems to be unproductive," said Muhammad Ashraf, a retired government employee. It has been observed that people at their will violate the traffic signals and despite promise by traffic policemen that such people would be booked no action has been taken so far. This has put a question over the efficacy of traffic signals and their regulation by the concerned department. Although the installation of automatic traffic system has helped to streamline the flow of traffic in the city to a large action sources in the traffic department suggest the vital control room supervision that regulates traffic in metropolitan cities is still not in place in Srinagar. This they say is quite pivotal to the overall success of automatic traffic signal system."Through an automated control room traffic in metropolitan cities gets directed and supervised from a single control room. Such a single control system is still not operational in Srinagar. It is due to this reason that no automatic diversion of traffic from heavily trafficked or choked streets takes place thus resulting in frequent traffic jams," said the sources. |
