| Abrogate Article 370 to empower weaker sections | | Debate on nation-building | | Neha Jammu, Oct 10: Gone are the days when the RSS, BJP and similar other organizations would demand abrogation of Article 370 saying it had not only hampered the process of the state's integration into India, promoted communalism and separatism in Kashmir, perpetrated injustices on Jammu and Ladakh and created inter-regional bitterness and animosities. Things have now changed and changed to the extent that a number of non-BJP and non-RSS social and political organizations have taken the big plunge and condemned Article 370 and held it responsible for their under-development and no say in the governance of the State. A number of non-BJP and non-RSS organizations have started saying that the Kashmiri leadership and its henchmen in Jammu have abused Article 370 to not only benefit Kashmir and a section of Kashmiri population but also to deprive the weaker sections in Jammu province of their legitimate rights which are available to their counterparts in rest of the country. Apart from the BJP, RSS and the Panthers Party, which have been demanding a serious discussion on Article 370 to find if it has harmed or benefited the State and its people, the organizations like the BSP and All-India Backward Classes Union (Social) and representatives of the refugees from West Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir have urged the authorities in New Delhi to abrogate Article 370 saying its repeal alone could help the weaker sections in the State regenerate their socio-economic and political life. Only the other day, the All India Backward Classes Union (Social) demanded a debate on Article 370 and accused the vested interests and ruling elite of "brazenly abusing" Article 370 in order to deny the weaker sections their fundamental and constitutional rights. "Ruling elite of Jammu and Kashmir has been misusing the special status only to further their own personal interests," general secretary of the Union Kali Das was quoted as saying. The same day, the BSP, which has been demanding trifurcation of the State for almost one year now, also shared the view of Kali Das and others of his ilk, including those in the BJP, and stated that Article 370 has to go if the weaker sections in the State are to enjoy their fundamental and constitutional rights. "It is all due to Article 370 that the OBCs are not getting their constitutional rights in Jammu and Kashmir," State BSP president that "his party had launched a campaign against Article 370, which is an obstacle". What happened in Jammu on Wednesday can be legitimately construed as a very positive development. Article 370 is a curse and this fact has to be appreciated. However, it would be better if all the parties and social groups, who are genuinely opposed to Article 370, form a common front to take on the votaries of pernicious Article 370. They would also do well to educate the public opinion in Kashmir in this regard. It is a must because the Kashmiri leadership has been hoodwinking and misleading the Kashmiri Muslims through a misinformation campaign that the abrogation of Article 370 would hurt their interests, which is not the case. |
