Traffic moves at snail's pace at Lakhanpur, no respite for commuters
Delay in repair of old Ravi bridge leads to congestion
10/10/2013 10:57:47 PM
RAKESH SAMBYAL

KATHUA, Oct 10 : Even as Jammu-Pathankot National Highway was widened as a four lane road and a high tech Toll Plaza thrown open at Lakhanpur for the smooth and speedy movement of the vehicular traffic, the vehicle operators are finding it a hard task to cross Lakhanpur area due to traffic snarls on new bridge built over river Ravi connecting the state of Jammu & Kashmir with the rest of the country.
The inordinate delay on part of the authorities to repair old Ravi bridge, the Traffic moves at a snail's pace while crossing the new bridge, which is not enough to cater to the huge rush of vehicles moving to and fro Lakhanpur.
Struck in a traffic jam at the bridge, the driver of a private car coming from Haryana told Early Times that he along with his family members is going to holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi.
The moment he reached Madhopur his car was stuck in the traffic jam. He has reached to the end of bridge in near about one hour, but its still about 400 meters more to go. On one hand there is a lot of pollution and on the other hand high temperature, due to which the children are suffering a lot. He said, "Sorry to say but it seems as if there is no responsible administration at Lakhanpur."
A truck driver said that he operates regularly between Pathankot and Jammu and the problem of jamming is there for the last few months.
The traffic jam problem was the special identity of Lakhanpur. "After the existence of Toll Plaza and construction of four lane highway they had thought that the traffic problem at Lakhanpur will be eased out but the problem is still prevailing.
At least the concerned departments should take notice of the traffic congestion at the gateway of J&K," he added.
DTI Sarabjeet Singh said that their team is doing its best at Lakhanpur, and the problem is just at the ending point of bridge.
As the old bridge is closed for repair work the traffic of both the sides converges at one point.
Moreover there is a 90 degree curve at the end point and vehicles find it difficult to take turn. "This problem will prevail untill and unless the old bridge gets repaired," he added. On the other hand, the officials of Toll Plaza said that the DC has taken up the matter with Highway authorities to get the bridge repaired soon.
