Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 10: Despite legislators' chorus for summoning the former Army Chief, Gen.V.K.Singh,to the House for explaining his stand on his remarks that politicians in Jammu and Kashmir received money for maintaining stability and harmony in the state, the speaker of the Assembly, Mubarak Gul, has decided to send a letter to Gen. Singh seeking his reply in writing.
Gul is said to have received appreciation from top Army officials, serving and retired, for having opted for allowing Gen Singh an opportunity to explain in writing what he said about payment of money to politicians in Jammu and Kashmir.
Gul had the option to summon Gen.Singh but he chose the proper while considering the status and position of the former Army Chief.
Official sources said that the letter would be framed by the Assembly secretariat in consultation with the Law Department and after getting it whetted from the Law Minister it will be dispatched to Gen.Singh.
Voicing anger against Gen.Singh was normal in view of the seriousness of the charges. Gen Singh had alleged that ministers in J&K were being paid by army since 1947 to help in stability and harmony of the State. There were also allegations that Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir had received Rs 1.19 crores from former army chief's special intelligence unit to topple Omar government in 2010.
Inside reports said that the NC legislators were fully charged with anger because Gen.Singh had alleged that the Army's intelligence unit had paid Rs.1.19 crores for toppling the Omar Abdullah led Government.
Government circles in Delhi said that since the former Army Chief had clarified after that the Army's intelligence nit had not paid Rs.1.19 crores to Mir for toppling the NC led Government he would fully explain his position on the matter. He is likely to explain that the money given to some politicians was to ensure peace in the state.
Though the speaker has made it clear that there was no need for summoning the former Army Chief unless his written reply failed to satisfy Mr Gul. Indications are that Gen.Singh was not going to be summoned as his reply would fully explain his statement.
