| Let NC, PDP leaders stop boosting Pak morale | | | Wittingly or unwittingly political leaders, belonging even to the main stream organizations, boost the morale of those agencies in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir that are engaged in exporting terror to Jammu and Kashmir. This is evident from the way some of these mainstream politicians keep on raking up the issue of state's accession with India. Agencies across the border feel encouraged in triggering conflict on the LOC and the IB in Jammu an Kashmir whenever mainstream politicians, especially those belonging to the ruling party, question the finality of the state's accession with India. For about 22 years Sheikh Abdullah, who had declined to join hands with Pakistan in 1947, had question this very accession with India which had forced him to spend years in jail and remain in the opposition. And when it regained power under an accord with Indira Gandhi in 1975 he would announce that he had not questioned the spirit of accession but the quantum of accession. If one reads between the lines the events that have developed within Jammu and Kashmir and on its border with Pakistan one may have no hesitation in saying that stepup in anti-India postures or anti-accession fulminations is followed by stepup in the militancy related activities and violence in the state. Look at the impact of the anti-Congress and anti-accession statements from the NC Additional general secretary, Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal. And since the time he has been questioning the finality of the state's accession followed by Chief Minister. Omar Abdullah's sermon that accession with India "is temporary" Pak troops have received the impetus for resorting to repeatd ceasefire violations for the purpose of carving out a passage for infiltrators. And when Omar Abdullah talked on infiltration and ceasefire violations the other day it sounded music to the ears of all nationalist forces. He has said that it was impossible for India to normalise its relations with Pakistan until the neighbouring country stops infiltration and ceasefire violations. "At least, it is through talks that Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) talked to (Pakistan Prime Minister) Nawaz Sharif in clear terms in New York and he said the situation should not remain as such and infiltration and ceasefire violations should stop. Supporting Singh-Sharif dialogue Omar has said that it was during the latest talks that they reintroduced a mechanism for it - that the DGMOs of both the nations would talk to each other to lower the level of conflict and tension. He said that relations can be normalized through the process of talks but talks and terror cannot go together and for ensuring successful process of dialogue infiltration and ceasefire violations have to be stopped. Though he claimed that when the channels of dialogue had been snapped ceasefire violations and infiltration of militants had not stopped, still there was an imperative need for promoting cordial ties between New Delhi and Islamabad and that could be possible through sustained dialogue. Yes Chief Minister is right in saying so.But if he, his partymen and some among the opposition PDP continue to berate the Indian troops and other security agencies and keep on questioning the state's accession with India coupled with demand for restoration of greater autonomy agencies across the border may continue to needle India in Jammu and Kashmir. One does expect mainstream politicians, especially those who have been tasting power, to behave with a sense of responsibility. They should not do anything or say anything that could make agencies across the LOC believe that people in Jammu and Kashmir were against the state's accession with India and people in Kashmir were opposed to the presence of troops on the border. Such an attitude is expected from NC and PDP leaders. But it cannot be expected from the Kashmir separatists who have been able to keep their shops open only on the slogan of UN resolution on Kashmir. If the mainstream politicians want peace to be given a chance they should themselves avoid touching sensitive and conflicting issues. Let Omar Abdullah start defending the state's accession with India. Let him and his partymen stop blaming the centre for diluting the spirit of autonomy and Article 370. They should remember that Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in India that enjoys special status within the Union of India. Let they derive satisfaction from this and stop providing some support, directly or indirectly, to the separatists. |
