SOPORE, June 24: Indefinite curfew was imposed in Sopore town of District Baramulla in north Kashmir on Tuesday following the death of a youth in a firing incident on Monday. The call for shutdown was given by both the factions of Hurriyat Conference. According to reports heavy deployment of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF was undertaken to prevent any untoward incident Since early morning, authorities imposed strict curfew to thwart protests against the killing. However, despite restrictions, youth took to streets and held protests. Reports said the youth pelted stones on the police and paramilitary forces. The clashes were witnessed in Chankhan, Hathi Shah, Ashi Peer and Chota Bazaar, Krankshun areas of the Sopore. Curfew will continue in Apple town Sopore for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. A senior official said, "That the restrictions under section 144 would be imposed in the town for the second day on Wednesday to maintain Law and Order. Sub-Divisional Magistrate SoporeKhurshid Ahmed Shah told Early Times that, "the authorities don't want to take any chances. "Although the situation is peaceful and under control, but as a precautionary measure, we have decided not to lift the curfew on Wednesday," he said. "The situation would be reviewed Wednesday afternoon to decide about the future course of action to be taken on Thursday," Shah said. Curfew was imposed in Sopore on Tuesday evening following the killing of Naseem Bagh youth at the hands of government forces. However Shops, Banks, Post Offices, businesses and educational institutions remained closed. The public transport was off the roads. No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in north Kashmir so far although security forces are on high alert. |
