Top HM militant surrenders in Handwara

BARAMULLA, June 24: A top militant of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) outfit surrendered before government forces in HandwaraTehsil of Kupwara District in north Kashmir on Tuesday.
According to police a militant namely Muhammad Maqbool Mir alias Najam, son of Ghulam Muhammad Mir, resident of SherkoteVilgam surrendered before Handwara police and army's 21 Rashtriya Rifles on Monday.
According to well established sources that Maqbool was active in the area form past one month and has infiltrated this side of LOC (Line of Control). Sources added that "He had ex-filtrated in 1993 to Pakistan Kashmir for obtaining 'illegal arms/Ammunition training. He recently infiltrated to our side and surrendered before the authority.
The said militant was affiliated with HM Outfit and had acquired the training for handling of various types of weaponry and Guerilla warfare tactics after being in Pakistan Kashmir for more than twenty years had infiltrated once in 1995 and remained active in Rajwar and Ramhal area of Handwara for few months," the police official said.
Najam ex-filtrated back to Pakistan Kashmir, he said, adding he was involved in a number of incidents of attack on army and security forces.
"It was because of constant motivation of amnesty by the Government that the relatives of said militants got surrendered before Handwara Police and 21 RR," he said.
Meanwhile, police sources said that a case has been registered in this regard and further investigations have been taken up.
Army and police busted a militant hideout in a forest of north Kashmir's Kupwara district and recovered arms and various other stores, official sources said on Tuesday.
According to official sources that the army's 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Jammu Kashmir police of Handwara, after receiving specific input search operation in Krumhura forest of Rajwar early on Tuesday morning. During the searches, official sources said, recovered: "a sniper rifle, a magazine, ten rounds, an AK 56 rifle, two magazines, 61 rounds, five UBGL grenades, a Radio set, a calculator, three pencil cells, a razor, a mirror, an ammunition pouch, a tactical jacket, a rucksack, a Pheran, a shawl and a T-shirt, sources said.
