| Home Ministry opposes amnesty to stone pelters | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 24: The Union Home Ministry is averse to the proposal of the State Government to grant amnesty to about 7000 stone pelters. The Ministry has reportedly told the Omar Abdullah Government to put on hold this proposal till the Assembly elections are over. The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had proposed to grant amnesty to almost all stone pelters against whom cases were registered in various police stations. The CM who was himself earlier opposed to such a move as many concerns were raised decided to go with it with elections in the mind, after it had received drubbing in the Parliamentary elections. Sources said the Home Ministry officials had communicated that some of the cases have strong tendencies to indulge in such activities and this could spell trouble in the Assembly elections. The concerns of the Ministry are coming true as the recent incident in Sopore has turned out to be. The situation there has turned tense and this has given the handle to the separatists to rake up the tension. "Sopore has proved right our apprehensions. We are not opposed to bring misguided youth in the mainstream but the timing is crucial. There are reports that separatists and their handlers are not happy with the peaceful Parliamentary elections and are desperate to trouble the Assembly elections," said an official, wishing not to be named. The Ministry has received information that elections are being timed with the developments across the borders and some other trouble spots. With reports being received that terrorists planning to shift focus on Kashmir, these stone pelters could be their asset and prey also, as they had been used in the 2010. |
