| Ceiling of Surgery operation theatre comes off, Emergency goes jail way | | Woes of GMC Hospital | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 24: Apart from having turned the emergency of Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital Jammu into a virtual jail, ceiling of the operation theatre of Surgery department has broken down within month of inauguration by top officials of the health and medical education department. A look at the emergency of the GMC Jammu explains how the political executive functions in Jammu and Kashmir while responding to crisis situation. Junior doctors backed by some seniors who have recently or some years ago cleared public service examination of Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) would often strike work over what they describe as threatening behaviour of attendants of patients. Even the presence of CRPF and police did not help in preventing the situation from going bad to worse. The lathi wielding policewallas would most of the time in full public view take the side of the abusive and often violent attendants. Situation used to get tense during the odd hours in the night with just female staff left to face the wrath of the agitated and at times, drunken attendants. The strike in the odd hours with mobiles of senior doctor either switched off or on silent mode would lead to patients including those needing critical care being made to suffer for no fault of theirs. Young Turks would prefer not to listen even to the repeated requests of the senior faculty members after having decided to go on flash strike. Government took note of this problem and turned the emergency into a jail by putting up iron gates at the entry of the emergency. Two men guard these gates. It is these two guards hired from a private agency who decided about who should be allowed inside and who should not be allowed. They open gates in such a manner that at times; it takes several minutes before a critical care patient is allowed to enter inside the emergency. These guards alongwith a team of CRPF are the ones who have been kept to ensure safety of the doctors. The iron gates have given GMC hospital the unique distinction of being the only hospital in the country where entry is restricted and limited. Apart from iron gates, the new minister of Health and Medical Education had made a valiant attempt of uplifting the infrastructure of the operation theatres but it seems to have backfired with ceiling of operation theatre of surgery department having fallen down into pieces within a month of its inauguration by the concerned minister. Besides, the operation theatre, nothing much has changed in wards. They continue to be filthy and medically unfit for critical patients. Washrooms continue to be stinky and dirty. Those engaged as sweepers prefer not to clean toilets regularly, resulting in patients catching infections and other diseases. Machines which had been specially brought to keep the hospital clean have failed to redress the basic issue of cleanliness and tidiness in the medical college hospital. |
