| Post advertised six months back, appointment nowhere in sight | | Appointment of NREGA Ombudsman | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 24: After over four years of long wait, Jammu and Kashmir Government has planned to appoint Ombudsmen at various places in the state for hearing complaints regarding Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme read NREGA. Early Times had carried a series of stories on this issue and on December 26, 2013 this paper had carried an exclusive story on absence of NREGA Lok Pal (Ombudsman) affecting the implementation of this centrally sponsored scheme. After the news was carried, Rural Development Department issued an advertisement notice on December 30, 2013 regarding appointment of Ombudsmen and subsequently applications were sought from the eligible candidates. It is now almost six months nobody knows what has happened in this regard and it seems the Govt has dropped the idea of appointing these NREGA Lok Pals. The State Government was planning to appoint one NREGA Ombudsman for three to four districts while as Ministry of Rural Development Government of India's guidelines had made it clear through its notification that one Ombudsman (Lok Pal) has to be appointed in each district. Neither there is one Ombudsman for three districts nor one for a single district and this is seriously affecting the implementation of NREGA at grass roots level which is marred by large scale corruption right now. |
