No decision on pre-poll alliance issue, CM candidate

Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, June 24: The one day session of state Congress leaders and workers failed to evolve a consensus on two important issues with respect to the Assembly elections being held after three or four months in the state.
The party is yet to decide who would be its Chief Ministerial candidate for the Assembly elections and it is also in a fix as to whether or not to forge any pre-poll alliance with any of the mainstream regional parties of the state.
These things became clear during the press conference addressed by All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, Ambika Soni along with senior party leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Pradesh Congress Committee President, Professor Saif-ud-Din Soz here today.
Ambika Soni said that the decision to forge an alliance before elections or otherwise has been left to the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi. She said that a complete report incorporating feedback of the Congress leaders and workers about the issues confronting the party would be presented to the Congress President in New Delhi.
"I am going back along with Azad Sahib today and Soz Sahib would join us very soon at New Delhi. We three have compiled a united joint report and the same would be submitted to the Congress President. The decision as to enter into any pre-poll alliance or otherwise would be taken by the party President," said Soni.
The AICC General Secretary who is also the in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir affairs said that detailed interaction was held with the party leaders and workers. She put a brave face by saying that differences between Azad and Soz have been buried and that party leaders as well as workers are very happy with this development.
Responding to a question as to who will be the Chief Ministerial candidate of Congress for Assembly elections, Soni said that the party believes in the resources available to it for winning the elections. She for the time being downplayed the importance of Chief Ministerial candidate saying that lot of time is there for the Assembly elections to be held.
"During my interaction with party leaders and workers I noted down the suggestions and feedback that I got. I will put all these things before the Congress President so that the picture is crystal clear. There is so much of time left for the Assembly elections to be held and there is no need to hurry. The decision would be communicated to the party leaders and workers of the state," said AICC General Secretary.
Soni claimed that Congress will emerge as the single largest party in the coming Assembly elections and provide a stable Government in the state. She exuded confidence that present coalition Government with National Conference (NC) will complete its full term. She said that the party would abide the commitment of ensuring six complete years of NC-Cong coalition Government in state.
The AICC General Secretary said that her party is very much shocked and disappointed with the defeat on the three Lok Sabha seats where it fought elections in state. She made a particular reference to Azad's defeat and said that party could not ensure win of former Chief Minister of the state. She said that coalition Government did a lot in the state and lot more needs to be done in coming months.
Soni said that state Government should fulfill the demands of the refugees putting up in the Jammu region. She said that problems of people living in border areas also need to be prioritized so that they feel relieved at the end of the day. She added that unemployment continues to be the burning issue in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sharing his views, Ghulam Nabi Azad said that state Government led by Omar Abdullah has failed to implement the Food Security Bill in the state. Azad said that needy people would benefit a lot with the implementation of this bill and urged the state Government to go fast on this issue.
Azad demanded that demands of Rehbar-e-Zirat should be conceded by the state Government so that they live a respectable life. He said that people of various districts of Jammu division posted in Kashmir should be repatriated to their home districts since they are stuck in Kashmir over the past 8-9 years.
