| BJP's threat to quit Govt taken lightly | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 7: BJP's threat to quit the government has not been taken seriously in view of the falling popularity graph of the organisation. Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh has said the BJP would not compromise on national interests in J&K and pull out of the PDP-led government "if it feels that it has become difficult to continue in the ruling coalition government". "Our coalition in J&K is not an ideological alliance, but an alliance of governance. No doubt problems arise because we have our own agenda and the coalition partner has a different agenda. The day the BJP feels that it has become difficult to continue in the coalition, we will opt out of the government," Nirmal Singh has said. However, senior BJP leaders said that the threat of snapping ties with the PDP was simply "hollow" because once the BJP withdrew its support to the PDP it would result in the imposition of the Governor's rule to be followed by fresh Assembly election. These leaders said that the Congress and the National Conference were not prepared to support the PDP or join hands with the PDP for Government formation because the Muftis had rejected their offer in March last. Also the NC leadership feels that the PDP has become a sinking ship in the state because of poor governance, the coalition Government had given to the people of the state during the last over three months. Reports said that both the PDP and the BJP fear fresh elections as both may not be able to repeat the 2015 poll performance. As far as the BJP is concerned it may be mauled in the Jammu province from where it had won 25 out of 37 seats in the last election. Even if the AIIMS was set up in Jammu the BJP could simply regain part of the ground that it had lost during the last over three months. It is this fear that has compelled both the BJP and the PDP to ensure that the coalition survived for full six year term. According to these reports, the Congress and the NC were trying to widen the wedge between the BJP and the PDP. And if either the BJP or the PDP falls in the trap it would be a sort of hara-kiri.. Senior Congress and NC leaders treat the threat of quitting the Government, dished out by Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh,as "hollow" and meant for publicity. They said that Nirmal Singh was trying to regain the ground the BJP had lost by dishing out veiled threats of quitting the Government. The Congress leaders said that if the BJP was keen to pull out of the Government why should it simply dish out threats. The PDP has not begged for its support and participation in the Government. However, BJP and PDP leaders described the Congress and NC leaders' views on the issue as part of their plan to widen the gulf between the coalition partners. |
